According to the BoM, Nephi was the son of Lehi, a prophet who delivered his message to the unbelieving Israelites before the Babylonian Captivity. He was told by God to leave Jerusalem. He eventually built a ship which brought his believers to the "Land of Promise", or America. Nephi became the ancestor of a "light and delightsome" people who were exterminated by the darker Lamanites, who in LDS belief are the Native Americans.

I'm not Mormon but I was for a while interested in that faith which is where I picked this knowledge up.
