Actually, these are merely the buzzer type alarms we've all heard, just with an extra ommph for use in noisy area. And since this looks to have been the kitchen. My grade school many millennia ago had them in the gym and cafeteria.

I've heard these go off and it's so irritating, you don't want to be in the building whether it's on fire or not.
