Oh man, it is weird seeing Tommy and Marie in my style! :) I tried to make them as close to Miyazaki's interpretations that I could... just with my own flare. I am getting so much faster with my art, I am so proud of myself! I decided to finish this tonight instead of tomorrow. Tomorrow, I'll get more commissions done on top of what I got done today! *carpal tunnel cramp*
For those who are not familiar with this anime, it is the "Sherlock Hound" (Meitantei Holmes) series by the esteemed Hayao Miyazaki (who only ended up directing 6 episodes because things came up). Ever since I was 7 years old, I have adored this series, especially Mrs. Marie Hudson. I appreciated a strong female character amidst all the weak female characters I saw on TV back in the 80s. To make things better, I always wanted to be a pilot, and Marie is an aviatrix. I also always loved Tommy dearly. Even though he's only in one episode (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RtGDtH7O6D4), his personality just shines... plus, he's a sexy little pup. :) I just love how bouncy and cheerful, yet very brave, Tommy is. Now, 20 years later, I *still* love this series and it *still* helps in defining who I am to this day. I will write a journal about this later.
When I drew them, I wanted to show a younger version of Tommy and Marie prior to the series. I'm guessing about 17-ish or so (Marie is 20 in the series, so I chose for Tommy to be around the same age as her... he seems to be, at least). I also kept them in relatively the same outfits as they had in the anime. I didn't want to draw Tommy's aviator cap since I wanted to show his fabulous hair. Why is Tommy smoking a cig? Because I wanted him to. I could see him smoking occasionally... maybe socially while having a few drinks. Think of the time period, man.
STORY: Also, I was talking with my friend, Daniel, while painting this and sending him WIP shots. We were trying to figure out what is going on in this picture for the fun of it, as I had no definite story behind it. He suggested that this takes place just after Jim (Marie's husband) died. Daniel also said it looks like there are obviously people behind what would be the viewer, maybe a gathering or something with the other aviators, and Tommy is glancing over there. So, there is Marie... all depressed and trying to make sense of her emotions. Tommy, being a good friend, is sitting with her and keeping her company. I also toned down the hues of this picture to give more of that "old time" feel. Now, any pictures I do of Tommy and Marie prior to the anime series will be sepia-ish. Pictures of them in the future will just be regular color. :) I have a whole story of these two, but instead of writing it out, I'm going to draw it. It's great practice both in character development (and analyzing what Miyazaki was trying to create in these characters!), story development, and I also get to practice my drawing and painting skills at the same time.
This makes me think... Marie is depressed and she has a gun. D: No wonder Tommy wants to sit by her and make sure she's okay! Good dog! *pat pats* >.> .... *pets pets pets pets peeeeeeeeets*

I ennjoy Hayao Miyazaki's works, including Sherlock Hound, and I think that you do much good by bringing back some of his older, lesser known works.
Ever since my Grandma moved in there has been a mix-up of what my Grandpa owns and what Great Grandma owns. Now they have two sets of many Disney movies around the house.
And I had heard of Sherlock Hound but had never seen it before...
Wrong, I know.
AGH! I'm sitting here watching Golden Girls. Rose said, "I never pluck my eyebrows." Blanche says, "I know. That's why from the nose up you look like Wilford Brimley." I like the betis!
Miyazaki sadly only directed 6 of the episodes. The whole series is good, but there is a vast difference of the episodes Miyazaki directed versus Mikuriya. Oh man, if Miyazaki had directed the WHOLE thing, it would be one of the best series around I think. You could tell he had special plans for this series. The characters are so rich and have a real depth to them, especially Tommy and Marie! :D Miyazaki wanted to have Marie Hudson actually be the brains of Baker Street, "running rings around Hound and Moriarty," but he was discouraged from doing so... so he just made her a very strong and kick ass female character. :)
anyway, nice and stylish. the colours and hues and overall looks fit so well in those ooold days when black and white actually meant white and almost, but not quite black because we ran out of brown. :)
also, it creates a nice atmosphere. the sky lighting looks like somethibng's up, and it creates a sense of something happening soon, if you catch my drift. the uneasy feel which makes you itchy and about to pack and go somewhere else, although the night is still young...
I like their outfit. also, fits the period well. and aviatrixes really wore dresses in cockpit back when, or is it her everyday dress? btw, kudos for avoiding high heels. she looks so much more serious with flat heels. :)
as for the fag, keep in mind that filters have not been invented 8or offered) until, I think, the 60's.
That is her everyday dress. In the series, she has an aviator outfit. XD It's so cute. The aviator outfit isn't a dress (a lot of women didn't wear dresses while flying, as well), but usually she is in her everyday clothes in the series. Those dresses look uncomfortable. D: Otherwise, I didn't design that outfit, or Tommy's. Those are the outfits from the series. :)
The cigarette doesn't have a filter.
ah, okay. I only know a glimpse of the series, they brought it when I was at work, like they usually do... :P
it looked a bit like one; my mistake.
Yes, steampunk is awesome!
the animation style is typical manga, but drawn relatively good and animated smoother than some other productions from japan and USA. I don't know if it was ever released in US, and must have had only a limited run on german TV (it's overdubbed into german). I stumbled over the VHS in some bargain bin.
they both stem from an old children's story. never read that, though...
now I feel old.
Great take on the characters too, I must say!
