My brother wandered outside of the temple, and seeing that I’d followed him this far, he relented and turned to talk to me. I gave him my old ring and talked about how I knew my change was hard on him too. I asked him to keep the ring as a reminder of who I was, and he latched onto my poor word choice, telling me that I sounded as if I truly wanted to leave my entire life as Lank behind. I was stunned that he would suggest that I meant that to include our relationship and pleaded with him to understand how I felt. We came from a home life that promised nothing to us and were now in an adventure that promised us greatness, and I wanted to embrace these changes alongside him, not despite him. It was too much for him, however, to readily accept. I was no longer his little kobold brother whom he could protect and then turn to when he needed emotional support. In his eyes, I was now the stronger one and he had nothing to provide. He felt left behind and yet did not know if he wanted to catch up.
…We were drifting apart in the face of change rather than growing closer.
This is a picture of the seventh in-game day of my current Pathfinder campaign with DM
Bomba and players
Marshtomphappy,
Serophous,
MonsterMutt,
CaitSith and
Quinn. Having been transformed from a kobold into a hulking beast a day and a half prior, Lank has tried to take on a new identity, going so far as to rename himself Gargantua after the first adjective used to describe his new body, because the pain of looking back at what he's now lost is too great. Turning to his adoptive brother Bigby (played by Marshtomphappy) for support and praying to find some, he instead found resentment. Bigby's deep-rooted codependency, which led him to feel a need to protect Lank at all costs, caused him to see only the new strength in his brother and to fear that he could no longer be that protector. The two of them were upset over similar issues and yet could not connect over them, causing an awkward few days of adventuring.
You can follow up on the latest events in the campaign as written by Lank/Gargantua here. Bomba and the players have been doing an absolutely amazing job making this much more than a by-the-numbers campaign and creating a web of relationships and plot that we all truly care about.
