I was thinking to make a better descritpion of it as soon as i will be at home. But to give a clue about what's going on with his soul, A part of it has ben shattered by his master in order to limitate his lifetime and power. A punishement to have tried to face the wish of corruption of the demon's circle. So, Anko need to purify his soul ofteen to limitate the damages on his body and spirit.
