I knew I wanted the character to have tentacles of some sort, and as I conceived her, I ended up settling on her being a cat who at some point wound up involved with a demon, with their respective essences merging. So her left hand/arm being able to shift into a mass of tentacles is the one of the side effects of that demonic influence. She's not fully of the mortal plane any longer, but also not fully demonic, and thus remains limited in her abilities in shape-changing ability. That's more or less where she originated from in my mind, at least in brief. :)
