I remember the epic FurryMuck lag, Type in a pose, then wait a half hour for the reply..

Ahh, the days before background database saves.

The issue was that memory was extremely expensive back then, and FurryMUCK's server (which keeps most of the MUCK database in memory) didn't have enough of it to go around.

So you'd end up with lag as the server would swap parts of the database out and in from RAM to disk as people moved about the MUCK. And when the server would save the database to disk, it would get even slower as it would have bring in any swapped out portions to dump them.

I'm glad RAM is cheap now. Really, really glad.

That's pretty interesting to know. I remember those major lags and even longer DB saves.

...and yes, really glad. I maxed out my desktop out to 16 GBs. In comparison, at my height of my FM activity, my desktop then had 8 megs.

Ah, I remember the frustrations. Still not as bad as on some of the gaming MUSHes where you'd lag in the middle of a combat and die.

This has always been among my very favorites. We were going to do THE SLOTH as a zombie NPC and have him freeze into freaky positions during saves.
