The Lesser Yinglets were dependent almost entirely on mollusk meat, their bodies seemingly getting absolutely every vitamin and nutrient they need from this very specific type of meat.
The Greater Yinglers, however, have the stomach for just about anything. Yet despite this, mollusk-flesh seems to still contain a balance of nutrients that can nourish a yinglet almost perfectly as a foodstuff possibly can; or so we must surmise, from the comparatively intense reward the brain sends a yinglet who tosses any down its gullet...

ā¦Ā That useless yellow metal is, actually, the best material known for thermal reflectivity; there's a reason that every space helmet is sputtered with about six dollars worth of gold in a high-voltage vacuum-chamber process.
It's also practically immune to corrosion, and has excellent electrical properties as well, especially for electrical contacts.

Kass still needs to learn to just roll with it. Yeah, she is the very thing he was cracking ethnic jokes about not that long ago, but learning to walk a mile in another creature's skinny legs'll be good for her,
Her friends stand by her side, including Lopin, as quirky as he is. She's gained more rank and prestige as a "scav" than she ever would have as a human. And she has easy access to the ultimate comfort food.
The job's pay sucks, but the bennies just can't be beat.

Yeah, it's an ethnic slur. Most yinglets (males, mostly) are too hyperactive and loopy to know the difference. But the matriarchs do, and it probably hurts and/or infuriates them. Kass being forced to walk a mile in their stilts is showing him how the other half live, and it's a lesson he and humankind need to learn.
And that's exactly why the Matriarch and the local Ventinari expy immediately intervened, to make sure that they could take advantage of the situation....by making sure Kass wasn't cast down. In fact, they lifted her up.
She doesn't like being so beholden to everyone either, but the perks are hard to beat.

I've been working a looooooong time writing descriptions, short stories, and doing editing of the original to pull out the ones I wanted to post separately. Sucks that I had to start over because the scan I was using actually turned out to be blurry in some spots and had some weird stretching thing going on in random spots. I've been working on it all day, and have a little bit left to write. Gonna be a lot of pics posted, though, but most are just head sketches to practice the wide range of expressions these guys have.
Also, I have a whole bunch of hilarious comic ideas crudely sketched or written down on sticky notes. I hate being so damn busy all the time so I can't work on this more.

It happened.... I have a few specifically for you, so check em out.

And god damn, this took ages to write and upload all that. I've only uploaded like 3 pics 11-12 years ago, so this was a fricken undertaking. I can't wait to finish my other work so I can get back to doodling again.

There's very little to say that Saphayla hasn't already summed up magnificently! I like how you remind the reader that post-transformation is a highly traumatic experience as EVERYTHING about her world has been turned upside down, as well as not betraying the serious ramifications there after. I've said it before and I'll say it again. This is an EXTREMELY well written comic and every moment I get to read more, I become that little bit more hooked! I theorize that we're in for a few days of a moping and depressed Kass as the rewards given to her as the Trademaster are simply material and very little comfort for her... let's just call it medical accident. We can see the progression as early on she tries to throw herself into her new work to find comfort only to have it fail, we have her go to the enclave and show her first moment of snapping even though her new body found the food agreeable and was no doubt instinctually comfortable in the environment, her body forcing her to adjust her sleeping patterns, and now finally her ability to adapt or ignore the problem by supplementing self reflection with external stimuli fail and the gravity of the situation to come crashing down. If I had to guess I can only assume that this wedding the Trademaster mentioned will come into play soon and something is going to happen that will provide a new focus for Kass. If I had to further that guess, I'd say that either she's going to see the alleged suspect either in the crowd or trying to collect his spoils from Lopin, OR getting separated from her friends/bored of the ceremony (due to Yinglet attention span) and ending up with a group of Yinglet that end up providing her more enjoyable hijinks and offering her some form of escapism that sets up a growing conflict of personal identity later.
Either way, the importance of Elim and my admiration for him as a character has only grown as the series progresses. I was initially worried he'd end up as a sort of background character as you introduced new faces, and am happily wrong in that assumption as you strike this incredible balance with your pacing and the screen time of Kass's little posse of Out-Of-Place-Peeps. Furthermore, I saw some of the early pages of this comic by chance the other day in someone's favorites and have noticed just how drastically you've been improving. You are an EXCEPTIONALLY talented artist and your rate of improvement is astounding! With every passing page you leave a rapidly growing lingering air of a world to take root in the imagination and inspire the thoughts to come! You have a world here that continues to live well beyond the pages. You have nothing but my undying support and applause and I consider myself blessed to have met you! Keep up the good work, because I know you are capable of great things!
In closing, and this is more of a side note, I feel rather silly at how excited I got over the mentioning of the lesser yinglet! I'm happy to see they're still a thing! lol I sort of just perked up going "OH I KNOW WHAT THOSE ARE!!!" So a nice inclusion of lore and world building! Bravo!!! And poor Lopin! I hope your tooth grows back soon your glorious little fellow!!

lol yeeeeah... I'm sort of still appreciating the irony in that. But you do sum up everything marvelously!
Ah, well I'm a sfw kind of fellow through and through ^^' None of that sort of thing. I just count my blessings that I had the fortune to log into FA at the right moment and see a page of this spectacular comic and become thusly hooked! And once more I must agree with you! The amount of consideration that Sal puts into this serious not only showcases his creative genius, but also the integrity of the series! In a website full of what you describe as "fap material" this comic DEMANDS to be respected, and every page, even the silly ones manage to make the reader do so naturally! Heck I feel like a television program based off this series would be well deserved!! The Merchandising success potential for the Yinglets would easily stomp the (lazily designed) Minions! And I LOVE the Field Guide! I think I possess obsessive personality traits as whenever I get really into a series (Star Trek, mass Effect, Halo ect ect) I try to learn as MUCH as I can about that series and all the lore behind it to make the world feel fuller and more complete to me. And Val Salia is no different to me! The mutations, genetic diversity, the mystery of their sudden appearance, the greater and lesser Yinglets, it ALL fascinates me wholly and totally! lol If you go back over the more recent pages and find the ones I commented on, I'm CONSTANTLY trying to treat the story as a mystery that needs to be solved, because that's how it reads to me. Once more your acumen is unparalleled as I have AGAIN to agree with you! The series isn't just focused on the transformation, but rather the aftermath, and for Kass to some degree (or us as the reader) the question of "Who done it?" I try to stitch together theories whenever I leave comments and think of what possible direction the story could go!
As for why they have breasts AND lay eggs, I'm not entirely sure! lol I'll have to work on a theory for that! I'd have to hypothesize that either they're a new type of creature that turns the paradigm of Lizard, Mammal, Fish, Insect, Bird on it's head, OR given their mostly mammal physiology and their rather twitchy genetics/mutation probability, and near drug-like response to certain foods like Oysters, that they're not a particularly HEALTHY species or that their bodies have a difficult time regulating themselves. If that is the case, the bodies could be unable to provide needed levels of calcium for their offspring directly, so instead they're born in eggs which the infant would later devour to replace that missing calcium or vitamin before maturing as a traditional mammal off of milk. lol but that's purely speculation.

Indeed! And with every page Sal shows off his ability to make every page good enough to practically stand on their own! Even when he doesn't upload a page of the story proper, any content related to this series never fails to excite me! Once I save up, I'm considering commissioning a comic from him! lol I'm just not sure what! You know, I've actually been working on my own novel for the last 13 years and some of the recent rewrites of the long since outdated intro I've had been compared to Tolkien! And that's very interesting! I never knew it started out as a children's book! And yes as for Sal, has this magical way of enchanting every little detail so that they all somehow maintain a presence in the story even when they're not there!! Again, the staying power of this world is nothing short of amazing! The world lingers off the pages! I actually have a friend in Thailand whose going through Medical School and is constantly stressed, and when I introduced him to the series he fell in love! He really enjoys it and it offers him a wonderful escape to relax. This series could do SO WELL as a movie or series!
lol well allow me to give you one more compliment and give you a watch! You seem like quite the interesting and intelligent fellow! And your interest in the series AND dedication to translating it for a broader audience is nothing short of admirable!! I'm trying to get into Linguistics and learn enough to flesh out some of the native languages of some of my species. That stuff bends my brain! The fact you're capable in more than one language is worthy of applause! Hopefully in the future I can find some people to help me get better with that sort of thing!

They are like platypuses and echidnas that way.
And as for a TV series, I could see that doable in a few years...CGI is that good and getting affordable. Ironically, a series like Little Foot, which (so far) has only yinglets and no humans, might be easier to do...humans are REALLY hard to animate with CGI (google 'uncanny valley').

Thanks a lot! I do occasionally look back at the first few pages to gauge the areas I've improved in, and the difference really stands out at this point. I'm happy with the improvement, but there's still a lot of things I want to get better at illustrating in the future.
Also, given Elim's position as the least "unusual/out-of-place" character, I've been very careful about not letting him get sidelined, as a character in his position so often is.

I think any artist worth their salt would feel the same way! I'm still working on your advice with inking and trying to figure out my next big step. But I know, with as talented as you are, those next steps you're wanting to take to get better will be made; and then you'll continue taking steps and improving in ways we could've never dreamed! You are a talented creator! I'd go as far as to say brilliant! Mark my words, one day I will commission you and thrust fistfuls of money thusly!!!
Well having the straw/straight man to play off of helps ground the reader and provides a gauge for how weird the rest of the situation is comparatively! lol he might not be the center of the story, but he provides a vital service I think. And generally he's just a likable guy! I'm curious about that dream we were seeing a few pages ago where he looks to have saved Kass's life! If that was more of a memory than a metaphorical dream, then I think there's quite a bit more to their friendship that we don't know!

Hmmm, so the oysters are plentiful in the kitchens of the most powerful local noble house...?
It would be the ultimate irony wouldn't it if Kass and Elim and the rest of the refugees were the only humans there that didn't like oysters, and they were actually considered high delicacies in Ivensmoth.

Haha yeah; the 4chan /trash threads are pretty lewd. Ironically, there were much cleaner and discussion-based threads in /co, before a new mod took over and started banning lots of comics. Which sucks, because there was a lot of good conversation about the story/setting that went on in those threads!
Much Like Pizza has most of what humans need, and in my case I "NEED" a weekly injection of Pizza... Also maybe the Yinglets lack iodine? This would explain their pupils being so large, also maybe their livers aren't as functional as humans, hence wheat can't be processed.
Get them a ton of fish/shellfish, their kind needs a "patriarch" of fishing/shrimping. Maybe with enough iodine in them that can cure their chronic "hangover".

Well, I binge-read this whole comic today and it was just... indescribable. I know each new page is apt to take a very long time to come out (I do comics as well and they take a NIGHTMARISHLY long time), but I wanted to thank you for the years of effort already. This has been very intense.
I'm so on information overload right now... All zhe wonderful comics, an I'm still only maybe halfway zhrough... and I want to art as well...Yes! creativity is flowing again!..
*twitch*but Reading.... no so easy now.. scatterbrain-adhd-yinglet-headed me.... I don't know what I want to do more... read... or draw...
...wait... ..oysters!?....
Yes! ...As I said.. I want to eat!...

Agh I hate how much in common with the yinglets I feel. They are a perfect example of someone who suffers from intense adhd! I feel like I have so much in common with them. Oddly enough even the mind fog that Kass expressed feeling. I wonder if that is something that people with ADHD feel? A constand hungover fog? Or is that just Kass... I HAVE SO MANY BURNING QUESTIONS! IT HURTS!
A lot of the time I feel like when I am high. (On the mary jane) I lose my spot in a sentence while I am talking and sometimes the entire context of the thought is lost in the flurry of emotions sights, smells, and other such feelings of just being alive its incredibly debilitating!

I just discovered this comic and I love how it develops, slowly, steady, organic, it's great. I feel like the transformation was a Deus ex machina needed to for this story to work and nothing more, other than that detail I'm love this. Can we please get a pool/folder/etc for this comic please?
