This was an original idea that started as a discussion between myself and :linkghoulchris, after I had expressed my interest in their character, and stated that I've still never been able to decide on one for myself yet. We brainstormed various ideeas until eventually I settled on wanting to create my very own "original" species. Though there's hardly many original ideas left at this point, I wanted to humor myself at the time, and just went along with whatever came to mind first.
I've since called them the Avilleum. They're a race of reptomalian (half reptile and half mammal) that original from a planet called "Gloria." At some point they had been planning to colonize Earth, which is out in "The Reach" (basically a part of space other lifeforms haven't been to yet), but by the time they arrived they realized: "whoa! There's already a race of people living here! Our bad!" Instead, they built an outpost on Mars, terraforming the planet, and eventually making it fit for colonization.
Originally they had intended to use Mars as nothing more than an outpost. As a means of remaining close enough to Earth for observational and educational purposes, however, they wound up getting a little too cozy and by the time they realized it. The planet had become habitable for more members of their race...
Eventually they attempted first contact, which didn't go exactly according to plan, because a war broke out between the avilleum and the human race, but it was short lived as the avilleum were quick to offer alternatives for peace and coexistence. A treaty had been agreed upon where the two sides would select members of their own race to go and live with the other. Through this they could learn about one another, each other's cultures, and use the knowledge they could gleam from one another in order to survive peacefully together.
Those from Gloria that went to live on Earth were part of the Earthbound Initiative. While humans from Earth that went to live on Gloria were part of the Glorian Expedition Group.
Anatomy of avilleum is a little special. While not exactly humanoid, they have humanoid features, making them somewhat semi-anthropomorphic. Each only has two fingers and a thumb, three toes and a dewclaw (not shown on this reference), a thick powerful tail, two almost deer-like ears, colorful feathers that run from the top of their heads to the base of their tails, scales around their feathers, but tough smooth skin everywhere else. Their faces are longer, similar to a horses in some aspects, however, their teeth are omnivorous like ours, but they can open their mouths much larger because they used to swallow prey whole. Avilleum also have two chambered stomachs, a lot like a birds, since the first is a mechanical stomach designed to grind food into mush, and the second one secretes digestive enzymes that further breakdown their meals.
Their race overall is fairly large and usually stand anywhere between 6 - 8+ feet tall on average fully grown. Fairly weighty considering their size, not to mention being something of a gluttonous race, but their additional bulk makes them all that more formidable. In terms of clothing they opt to keep things relatively simple. Jumpsuits of varying colors to distinguish between factions and jobs, armor that is comparable to what the Avali wear, and weapons that are plasma-based in nature.
Mikael is meant to serve as a representation of myself, my love for aliens, outer space, and all futuristic science fiction stuff along those lines. He technically isn't the first member of his species to have been created, that honor goes to Kyrie, and by extension Rufus (they were created at near the same time). But I still like Mikael all the same for his uniqueness even among those of "his own kind." His blue jumpsuit is specific to those in the Earthbound Initiative, while his goggles are actually glasses, because ordinarily they wouldn't stay on his face well without straps, and the hoodie is a gift he received shortly after coming to Earth and he's become very attached to it.
