Ahem... I hear my cue.
Back in the days of Nelson, there was need to stack canon balls so that they wouldn't just roll back and forth across the deck. Usually they were stacking on a brass rack, called a monkey. When it was very cold, the balls would shrink, and not fit in the dents in the monkey, and would fall out. Hence, so cold it would freeze the balls off a brass monkey. For some resaon it never occured to sailors using this expression that not only would they not understand it, it would be interpreted in an entirely inappropriate way by landlubbers.
