This hand-made metal globe sits in somebody's front yard, several blocks from me. The moment I saw it, I knew I had to take this photo! I had to wait until winter, then managed to miss the right moment, and wait again until next year. But finally I got myself into boots and coat and out after a particularly heavy snowstorm to take this shot before wind or sun disturbed the "ice age."
I had to be in the yard to take a shot of North America under its "ice cap," but it was worth trespassing. My flash illuminated a near-by traffic sign, as you can see. It did't occur to me until much, much later that it made a kind of "sun" next to the Earth.

If you ever have to drive in it, walk through it, or have to shovel shovel, you may change your mind about that!
Snow is beautiful in the countryside after a fresh fall, and stays that way often until the next snow fall. As long as you have no desire to go anywhere until Spring, that's fine. In the city, though, a beautifyl blanket of white snow lasts less than 24 hours. In fact, it begins to be pushed aside, piled up, tracked through by pedestrians, crushed into brown slush by traffic, and melted by cit heat almost as soon as daybreak has truly broken. In time, last week's snowfall becomes today's heaps of porous ice, partly melted and refrozen over and over, and blackened by soot. A New Jersey scrap yard is hardly more of an eyesore.

Snow was awesome the first time I saw it after moving out of Florida...
...Until it partially melted and refroze, leading me to slip and fall three times between my front door and the curb... Back-first onto the front steps, knees-first onto the walkway, and then flat on my back whacking my head on the sidewalk... I didn't fall the rest of the trip, but it was still less than fun to take the three-mile walk to work and work my 11 PM to 7 AM shift in the warehouse... >.>

I believe it. Plus, I ride a bicycle everywhere, and the drivers here are insane. I thought Florida drivers were bad... Here, it seems like they're actively trying to run me down... >.<
Then again, I suspect that any town I live in will have terrible drivers, from my point of view. Cars are the same way. Anyone driving slower than you on the interstate is an idiot, anyone driving faster is insane, and anyone driving the same speed is a jerk...
