Mile's backstory is a bit dark and twisted, actually.
Rejected for being considered a freak and friendless, Miles becomes a stalker towards the only one he perceives will even tolerate him. There is even a potential theory that the poor fox took this desire so deeply that he slightly robotized himself in order to have flight capacity in order to keep up with his perceived best friend and theorized lover. There is definitely a bit of a psychologist's payday in analyzing this relationship.
Or...they're just the best of friends, fighting against an evil overlord. Because, sometimes it is best not to think about how much of a bastard that Mario (Mario) truly is, neither.
