Our last vet followup was this past Saturday, to see if the systemic antibiotic would help. She was on this for the past month (previously it was topical antibiotics and a non-alkaline ear rinse). Unfortunately, her ear still tested positive for rod-shaped bacteria, and she was days away from it turning into a full blown mess again. :( The vet is certain the infection is sealed inside her ear drum, in a festering nest in her middle ear, and it is only somewhat responsive to antibiotics. She said Mugi would need a myringotomy which involves piercing the ear drum to access the middle ear and flush out the infection, which would hopefully clear it up for good. She highly recommended a dermatologist/ear specialist in the area, as the risk of nerve damage and facial paralysis was much higher with her since she's not as experienced. I have really appreciated my vet's honesty through all this, it is truly heart breaking to see such a cute face suffering from this condition.
Unfortunately the procedure will cost between $1400-1500 plus a $150 consultation fee, and the cost of painkillers and antibiotics and I'm not sure what else is involved in terms of palliative care afterwards. Considering that our vet visits have averaged $250 (the most recent ear rinse cost $99 for just the bottle, and the antibiotics are $15/pill), and it might take months to officially clear up, I just have a really heavy heart about the whole situation. The specialist is so busy, the only time she could squeeze us in is this coming Monday with possible surgery on Tuesday, otherwise it would mean waiting until after September, and Mugi can't wait any longer. This has been a huge strain on me financially, as I have been saving up for a laptop to be able to take my work with me, a car as my work is over an hour commute away each way which leaves me exhausted, and my never ending student loans. The car I can just wait.. I've been bicycling to the train station which has been a joy, but Portland winters are not too bicycle friendly. I always think of Calvin's dad in these situations 'It builds character'. Somehow building character as a little kid sounds appropriate, but these days I'm just a sleep-deprived mess.
I have always believed in giving our animals the best of care, it is just such a shocking situation as she is *so young*. She is just a year and a half old, and I did not expect this to happen. We didn't even get a chance to get her pet insurance, as her ear is considered a pre-existing condition. To say I'm frustrated at her old owners is a massive understatement.
I set up a gofundme to help with the costs, any extra will be donated to local cat rescues who do really wonderful work. Thanks everyone for your support and input, it's been an exhausting and horribly stressful situation. :(

Thanks so much ! I hope she'll get better after the surgery, I'm sure she would appreciate not having to go in to the vet again so soon. Every time we take her to the vet she summons the lung capacity of a demon hell cat, the whole 7 minute drive to the vet. T-T Who knew such a tiny body could make such a sound. On the other hand, everyone at the animal hospital thinks she is so stinking cute every time I bring her in all the techs come around to take photos. Little stinker.
We have a lot of vets around, but it can be hard to find a good one. :\ There's a banfield downtown that does a terrible job examining cats, and then they try to guilt you into buying medical plans. Bleh.. I get that they're businesses, but using guilt to buy their services just leaves a bad taste in your mouth. I imagine being on an island you've got to be a lot more self sufficient, especially for non-emergencies, but also know what to do for emergencies. It's good to hear things are calm out there!
I donated what I could at the moment. I hope her surgery goes well!
I wanted to suggest that you get pet insurance for her anyway. As you said, this is pre-existing, so it won't be covered (although some plans will cover if they go for 18 months or more without anymore issues from the pre-existing condition) ANYWAY.. I suggest doing it, because she will have other illnesses as she gets older and it will be a life saver to have. Example.. my 9yro cat had bladder stones a few years ago. I bought him insurance after, because if anything else comes up, I want it covered. Well, this year he was diagnosed with kidney disease. Its unrelated to the bladder stones and EXPENSIVE to treat... and it will only get worse as times goes on. But thankfully the insurance will cover him at 90% for life. So I would for sure get her in insurance asap before anything else comes up. I use Trupanion, which has been very good and you can set your own deductible. Another good one is HealthyPaws.
