After suffering from bouts of amnesia, wolf Phil searches for answers to his past and his present in the deserts of future Arizona and New Mexico. He finds himself drawn into a war between robots and living, breathing furs, he finds that he may have been used as a weapon by the enemy robots, called the Assyrians by their use of the Assyrian lion on their bodies. He quickly makes friends on both sides of the war, including two special agents and an ex-robot spy named Evan. Both give him insight into his past and to what is right and wrong. It soon comes down to him to destroy the Assyrians, or at least return the robots that are fighting for them to their original, living bodies. But when he makes a horrible discovery and his memory is returned, will that change anything?
