Early on a cool Spring morning, Kiron and Mag strode out of town, making their way towards one of Kiron's preferred training spots, favored by Kiron for it's tranquility. All was not tranquil with his young pupil, however.
"I don't understand", Mag complained groggily. The young canine's body expression oozed discontentment, and his hunched back and drooped ears just served to accentuate his displeasure. "What is the purpose of this? Can't we do the very same thing at any other time of day that is not the crack of dawn?" The young Shepherd whined.
"And how would putting off this routine prove of benefit you? It is not just your body that is being built by this young one, but also your discipline. Discipline in the realm of the physical helps those who wish to achieve discipline the mind build it This is why we do these exercises Mag. Now, assume the stance, and begin your katas." Kiron instructed as he dropped into his own kata stance.
Mag sauntered his way over, slinking sloppily into position, still sulking at being out so early in the morning. This little act of defiance, however, was not unnoticed by Kiron.
"Attitude, young Mag, is one of the tenants of discipline you still seem to have much to learn in," Kiron scolded, "if you cannot control your emotions in a mere exercise, what makes you think you will be able to control them should you come under great stress and pressure?"
Mag winced at Kiron's words, but nodded in acknowledgement. Drawing a deep breath, Mag straightened his stance and began the motion of his kata without further complaint.
"Good," Kiron remarked with a smile, "now focus, and let all that distracts you from the now fade from your mind."

This truly magnificent piece was done
Honovy who this time I was happy to have pick a character and paint based on the idea that came to her based on the character's development arc. And I am absolutely thrilled with what she came up with in this commission, as it is well within Kiron's character XD
Figure I'd upload this one before heading out tomorrow XD

Historically speaking, no,
In fact, many civilizations trained in very minimal clothing, as there were no such stringent conventions of modesty as there are today. The Spartans trained in such a manner from a very young age. But they were not the only ones. The Romans, the Incas, in fact anyone that lived in an area where the climate was warmer tended to use little clothing for training. In fact, the ancient Egyptians used minimal clothing while fighting in war. And this is simply because we did not have the modern methods of cooling down that Armies have available today, such as air conditioning and ice. Hell, in some countries, appropriate swimwear day and age is less than what is shown (i.e. the speedo).

I'm not sure I fully follow the comment,
The state of dress is not a distraction to Mag, as there is not, nor was the ever or will there ever be, a sexual attraction in the character dynamic. The distractions Kiron refers to Mag about are the daily mundane things that tend to fill people's minds and cause them to lose the moment causing folks to live in the "tyranny of the now." Plus there is the historical context. It is not that he's "stripped down to cause a distraction," but in fact many civilizations before the age of air conditioning and ice wore the bare essentials when they conducted training and exercises, and many of the things that I draw inspiration when developing Kiron as a character are those ancient people's.

I think my only issue with this is that the muscles appear too 'tense' in the torso area. Mainly how the chest relates to the raised arms. They don't seem to stretch with the rest of the upper body? Aside from that, the composition looks great! Kiron has a really focused look hear, perfect for the story. I'm really liking young Mag in these stories. Just shows that once upon a time he was an impatient young man who had a lot to learn. I have to say, I think Kiron is becoming my mentor too. It made me think how inconsistent I am.
Not fussing over daily routines and maintaining them consistently at a certain time is important, in any field in life. I can imagine even more so given your profession, Mag. And a note on the 'nudity'. Unfortunately, our Western culture (writing as an American) automatically links any form of nudity with sexuality/eroticism. I admit I fall prey to this as well. But like you stated earlier, historically, stripping down to the basics was part of warrior training, even basic living depending where you lived. Hell, before swimming trunks were invented, men went skinny dipping; not questioning a sexual intent. Our culture is too sexualized!
Apologies for the lengthy writing.
