Well... I usually put two planes of the same size against eachother as a box and use a front image of any character as a texture for the plane that's visible in the front view and a picture of the side of the character for the left viewport. ^^
Then I usually start with a plane of which I extrude the edges and use the front and left view in order to place the polygons the right way! X3
When I have one side of the face done I then use the symmetry modifier in 3dsmax to copy the contents that's on one side to the other so that I have a complete face!
Then all I've gotta do is model the rest of the body next to the Symmetry modifier.
When the model is done I dump the Symmety modifier on the whole model (so that it is one big model), then I usually select the vertex-mode in de object properties, select all the vertexes of the character and use the 'weld' tool set at 0,01 to make sure that there aren't any gaps in the model.
After that is done I usually start to create and map the textures to the model and it's finished! ^_^

haha I love the bottom right expression. Hmm if you want to dabble with 3d modelling..you could look into mudbox. I think they have a free demo..and its kinda a new way of looking at 3d modelling..more like sculpting/painting than working in a program like Maya...some people have likened it to photoshop only 3d xD. I have yet to try it myself but itd be cool to see your creations in teh 3-d
