A pair of friends get stranded in the middle of the ocean. The solution? Why, inflation of course!

Duo Cruise
“Sean, get on up here! We’ve got a nice cool breeze blowing!” A voice called from above. An otter sat up upon hearing his name.
“Coming!” He answered back. Getting up from his seat, the otter headed towards where the voice came from, climbing a short flight of stairs up onto the roof. He joined his friend, a hyena, against the railing, taking a deep breath of fresh air. From their vantage point, the view in front of them was dominated by an endless stretch of blue. Behind them, the sandy shores of the mainland faded far into the distance.
“Haaaaaaaah, you were right, Jacob. The sea breeze does feel nice.” The otter sighed.
“Especially on a hot summer day like this!” His friend added.
“Indeed.” Sean had never imagined that he would be experiencing something like this in his lifetime, but fate said otherwise. Here he was, sailing through the ocean on a private yacht, heading to a personal vacation home located on an island. The otter considers himself lucky that he had a rich friend like Jacob. Jacob’s family had a widely successful business under their name, giving the hyena a lot of disposable income to work with. He could buy virtually anything he pleased, much to Sean’s amazement.
“Thanks for taking me along on this trip, Jacob. I’ve never been so far away from land before!”
“Aww it’s nothing, pal. I’m happy you were able to make it. We had to have some time to go out and have some fun over the summer together, right?”
“Well, yeah, I had hoped.” The otter admitted. “But this is better than I ever expected! I can’t wait until we get to the island!”
“Being on an island is pretty different experience.” Jacob explained. “The isolation from society is something to get used to, but since we’re together I’m sure you’ll grow to love it!”
“I probably will!” Sean replied. “I’m already loving this.” The two friends stopped talking for a while after that, soaking in the atmosphere, watching the small waves crashing as the yacht continued it’s course. Several minutes passed, the otter and hyena pair practically sunbathing on the roof at this point.
Sean broke the silence with a question. “So, how long until we get to the island anyway?” he asked.
“Hmm? I’m not too sure about that, actually.” Jacob replied. “Could be around another hour or two at this rate.”
“Hey, I’m all for relaxing in the sun and all that, but I think I would rather be doing it with some sand under my toes if I’m being honest.” Sean said.
“I know what you mean.” The hyena agreed. “Wanna go speed things up a bit?”
“We can do that?” Sean asked.
“Sure!” Jacob replied. “It’s only been cruising by itself at a steady pace. We can go step on the gas and get us really going if you wanted to.”
“Well, what are we waiting for? Let’s kick this thing into high gear!” Sean said, getting excited.
Jacob sat up and headed back down, Sean following behind. The pair came up to the yacht’s controls, currently set to automatic. Jacob took the main seat in front of the wheel, preparing to shift into manual. Sean was about to take the seat nearby, but stopped once he noticed it was occupied by “...Oxygen tanks?” The otter asked. There was quite the number them bunched up on and around the seat. They didn’t look like normal tanks by any means. Considering the size of them, they seemed more like refill tanks.
Jacob turned to look, his eyes widened. “O-Oh! Yeah, those! I-I brought along some scuba gear for the both of us!” The hyena hastily explained. “Thought that would be fun to do. I got those tanks so we had some extra air to use just in case, yeah.”
“O-Okay, cool.” Jason seemed a bit flustered by the subject, so Sean thought it best to leave it at that.
“Alright, best hang onto something Sean, because we’re going full speed ahead!” Jacob shouted, grabbing the throttle and pushing it forward as far as it could go. The boat lurched, almost skipping across the water before surging forth in a burst of speed. “Aww yeah, now this is how you travel!”
Sean held on tight to a pole sticking to one side as the boat tilted backwards from the velocity. Looking behind him, the otter could see the wide wake the boat left against the ocean. “Uh, Jacob?” Sean shouted over the roar of the engine. “Don’t you think we’re going a bit too fast?”
“Nonsense!” Jacob yelled back. “The sooner we get to the island, the longer we can-....huh?” The engine suddenly fell silent. The speeding yacht quickly lost momentum as it glided through the water without propulsion. Eventually the boat came to a complete stop, resting in the middle of the ocean.
“Why did we stop?” Sean asked. “Is something wrong?”
“Um...” Jacob scratched the back of his head. “We’re out of gas.”
“Wait, what!?” The otter exclaimed. “What do you mean we’re out of gas!?”
“Exactly what I said. Looks like we’re stuck here, wherever we are.” Jacob sighed. “Sorry.”
“Oh gosh, we’re stranded.” Sean panicked, pacing. “Lost out in the middle of the ocean! What are we gonna do? How is anyone gonna find us? What if we-“
“Sean, calm down for a sec!” Jacob ordered, grabbing the otter. We’ll find a way out of this, just keep a calm head. At the very least we’re still together, so just remember you’re not alone here.”
Sean took a deep breath. “...Alright. Thanks, Jacob.” He said.
“No problem.” The Jacob responded, patting the otter’s shoulders “Now, why don’t we find out just where exactly we are and see if there’s anything nearby?”
The two climbed back up to the roof of the yacht, their view once more greeted with the endless expanse of blue sea. “Hmmm. Nope, we’re doomed.” Sean concluded, throwing his hands up in the air.
“Wait, I think I can see something!” Jacob said, pointing. Sean followed his gesture and focused, noticing far off in the distance was a patch of land.
“The island!” Sean exclaimed. “We made it! Mostly!”
“Yeah, problem is that we’re way too far out to just swim the rest of the way.” Jacob pointed out. “Unless you want to spend the whole day rowing this heavy thing to the island.”
“Ha! I’ll pass.” Sean said. Heading back down. “We’ll just have to contact help on our cell phones and...what the!?”
“What is it now, Sean?”
“There’s water on the deck!”
“What, really?” Jacob headed back down, landing in a thin puddle of water that covered the wooden floor. “Aww jeez, this day just keeps getting better and better, doesn’t it?” The hyena said mockingly.
“I-Is the boat sinking!?” Sean was starting to panic again. “We probably could’ve survived as long as we still had ground to stand on, but if we’re sinking, that’s not going to last very long! At this rate we really are going to-“
“SEAN!” Jacob grabbed the otter’s arm and yanked him.
“Ow! What?”
“Remember what I said about staying calm.”
“I know. I know, but-“
“Yes, the boat is sinking. Probably some damage in the hull. We’ve got time, but eventually we will lose this boat. It’s best that we use that time to prepare. It’ll be a lot better in the end if we can, okay?”
Sean slapped his cheeks. “...Okay.” he said, calming down again. “I assume you have something prepared for this?”
“But of course! It isn’t foolproof, but I can guarantee it’s better than nothing.” Jacob led the otter to a supply closet. “Remember how I said I brought equipment for us to go scuba diving? I wasn’t talking about just the air tanks!” The hyena opens the closet to reveal two black latex wetsuits. With them were pairs of flippers, snorkels and a couple more air tanks. “Even after the yacht sinks, we should be able to last longer with these.”
“Oh, great! These should help out a lot!” Sean cheered. “Let’s hurry and get these on!”
Slowly, the pair changed into their wetsuits, taking a lot of time as they struggled with the tight-fitting latex. The water level gradually rose while they worked to put on the suits, coming up to their knees when they were finished and picking up speed as the boat was weighed down.
Not wanting to spend too much time in the rising water, Sean grabbed the rest of his gear and retreated to the roof, his suit squeaking with his movements. Jacob followed shortly after, but went back down after leaving his gear behind. Sean wondered what else the hyena was planning to take when he noticed Jacob was bringing up the extra air tanks with him. “Why are you taking those with you? We don’t need them when we have our own tanks, so we?”
“Eh, better safe than sorry?” Jacob replied.
“We won’t even be able to carry those around once the boat is fully sunk. They’ll just go down with it!” Sean wasn’t buying it. “You know, you acted a bit strange about these tanks when I brought them up earlier.”
“Strange? No, of course not! I...I’m just concerned for our safety, that’s all!” Jacob dodged, looking away.
“See, there you go again!” Sean accused. “These tanks are important to you for some reason!”
“Sean, we really don’t have the time for this...” The main deck of the yacht was underwater at this point, their perch at the roof sinking lower and lower. It wouldn’t be long before that too was lost.
“Just tell me!” Sean yelled. “What were you going to use those tanks for?”
Jacob didn’t respond. He had his head down, away from Sean’s sight. After a moment of silence, the hyena began to laugh. “Heh....Hehahaha! It’s about that time, isn’t it?”
“...Jacob?”
Jacob lifted his head, a wicked grin was spread across his face, scaring Sean a bit. “Alright then, I’ll tell you.” He said, grabbing one of the tanks. He approached the otter, prompting him to back up into the railing. “Better yet, I’ll show you. I brought the these tanks along so I could do...this!” Jacob suddenly lunged forward, restraining Sean by his arms so he wouldn’t fight back. J-Jaco-MMMPH!” Sean’s protest was cut off by a nozzle getting shoved into his mouth.
Before Sean could assess the situation, the tank was cranked open, letting pressurized air rush through. The otter’s insides were blasted with the oncoming flow, letting out a muffled grunt as he felt a building pressure. Sean looked down and yelped in surprise as his middle began to expand before his eyes. It grew outwards like a bubble, his latex suit squeaking all the while. The otter tried to get away, to move around, to do anything, but Jacob’s grip was too strong for him to break. The otter was completely helpless until the tank of air finally ran out, leaving Sean with a positively round belly, big enough to block his view of his feet from around that inflated dome.
The nozzle was removed from Sean’s mouth, giving him a short break. “Wh-what are you doing to me!?” The otter questioned.
“Isn’t it obvious?” Jacob replied. “I’m making you into my own personal life raft!”
“B-But why?” Sean asked. Another nozzle was shoved into his mouth in response, the second tank prepped to release its load.
“Well...what if I told you that I set this all up from the start?” Jacob said, turning on the tank. “Did you not think the trip itself was the least bit suspicious?”
“Mmmph?”
“I mean, really. Taking a yacht out this far into the ocean just to get to a villa on an island? Does that not set off any red flags? If we were going to an island, it would’ve been much easier if we had flown there in a helicopter or, I dunno, a jet? We have one of those, I think.”
The second tank of air petered out while Jacob was talking, having blown Sean up to the size of a raft. The tank was thrown aside to make room for the next.
“So, what of the yacht? Did you sabotage that on purpose?” Sean asked.
“Exactly.” Jacob answered, rewarding the otter with another torrent of air. “The hull of the yacht was damaged beforehand so that it would start sinking eventually. I also had its fuel running low so we would end up stranded as we are now. It all worked out pretty well, don’t you think?”
“Mmm Mmmph.”
“Oh right, I still didn’t tell you why.” Jacob said. By now, Sean had swollen larger than a car, his arms too puffy to need restraining, as he couldn’t reach the nozzle anymore. A fourth tank was provided to keep the expansion going. “I’ve known for a long time that you’ve always had a peculiar trait of high capacity. I wanted to see it up close and in person myself, but I could tell you don’t like to bring it up, so I decided to create a situation where I could make use of it. Plus, I thought it would be more fun this way.”
“Mmph...Mmmpmmphh?”
“Of course I wasn’t going to hurt you! You’re a good friend of mine. If I seemed a bit forceful, I’m sorry. I did get quite a good scare out of you though, heh heh.”
“Mmmph.” Sean, now as big as a bus, floated on top of the water like a pooltoy when he was lowered down from the sinking yacht. His limbs hung uselessly at his sides, only able to wiggle a short distance. He laid there like a huge black balloon, making loud rubbery creaks and squirks at the touch.
Jacob was about to hook the next tank up when he noticed water lapping at his feet. The yacht was mostly sunk at this point, leaving little time left for the hyena to finish. “Oops, looks like I’m gonna have to speed this up. Do you mind?” Jacob held up the remaining tanks, meaning to unload them all at once.
“...Eh, not like I have a choice in the matter now, go ahead.” Sean conceded. “It was your plan, and you succeeded. Besides, I’m rather curious how far I can go with this myself.”
“Alright then, let’s make a real balloon out of you!” One by one, nozzles were jammed into Sean’s mouth, making a tight fit for the limited space he had. He jumped to the bloated otter, settling down onto his expansive back before turning all of the tanks on. A loud hissing filled the air as Sean was also filled with air.
Sean’s body surged in size, already as big as the yacht was and quickly surpassing it. Air pumped itself into the otter relentlessly, Forcing his form to swell outwards rapidly. Creaks emanated from his hide, but they came from his suit, which held together surpisingly well.
“Mmmh Mmmf mmpmh?”
“Why the latex suit?” Jacob clarified.
“Mmmph.”
“Yeah, it does seem kind of unnecessary in the grand scheme of things.” Jacob admitted. “It was...personal preference is all. Thought you should look the part.”
Bigger and bigger Sean inflated, growing bigger than a house, bigger than an apartment! Jacob’s vantage point became greater as the expanding otter under him rose higher into the air. He could more clearly see their island destination from up where he sat. The hyena was amazed at how big his friend was able to get, and still inching out bigger from the looks of it. This quirk of his was no joke!
After several minutes of fast-paced pumping, the air tanks quieted down to whisper before finally draining completely. Sean let out a long sigh as he mouth was finally free to breathe. “Whew! That....that was a lot.” He panted out.
Sean had grown to utterly massive. A formidable blimp of an otter that cast a large shadow over the ocean. The gigantic creaking black sphere of Sean’s belly loomed over the immediate area, many times larger than the yacht they had started out on. As a makeshift boat, he was the largest thing to have ever floated upon the sea, surpassing the massiveness of even the biggest cruise ships.
“Wow, Sean, that sure was fun!” Jacob said. “I never thought you would get this big! You’re like a giant rubber ducky!”
“Heh...am I now.” Sean replied. “Hey, I may be a giant life raft now, but what are we gonna do now?”
“Oh, it’ll be fine.” Jacob assured. “With you being this big, someone on the island is sure to notice and send someone to investigate.”
“Oh, that’s a relief.” Sean said.
“In the meantime though, I’m going to get comfortable.” Jacob said, snuggling into Sean’s back. “All this excitement in one day is pretty tiring.”
“Mmmm, I’m with you on that.” Sean agreed, relaxing into himself. "A little rest is just what I need.”
The pair dozed the day away together. A hyena and his personal otter balloon, swollen beyond recognition. Eventually help did come, servants of Jacob’s family bringing boats that dragged Sean back onto dry land. When offered assistance in restoring his previous size, the beached whale of an otter insisted that he stay this way just a little while longer, much to Jacob’s delight.
Sometime later, Sean caught one of the servants surveying the beach. “ Hey, are there any oxygen tanks around this place we could use?” has asked, grinning. The hyena smiled, catching on to his motives and joined in.
“You know, in case we want go scuba diving later...”
