Since I started getting really into One Piece, I’ve been wanting to create my own pirate crew, and so, presenting the Endless Sleep Pirates! Captain Somnum, eater of the Dream-dream fruit which allows him to enter and manipulate dreams of anyone asleep within a certain vicinity. To that end, the members of his crew have been handpicked because of their abilities to render their victims unconscious or asleep so their captain can learn their secrets and his crew can plunder the spoils! Ship’s cook is also a devil fruit user of the Mist-mist fruit which he uses to create a fog around their ship when they sneak up on other vessels. Other members use hypnosis techniques, sleeping gas, sleeper holds and even minor exsanguination!

Sure, and thx for showing the interest! ^_^
Captain Somnum front and center with his pillow. Dream-dream paramecia devil fruit powers allow him to enter anyone's dream within 100 meters. He can freely determine what happens in the person's dream and probe their subconscious to learn their secrets. He is able to keep someone who is already asleep from waking, even after leaving their dream for up to 24 hours. He can access multiple dreams of different people at once but this puts a great strain on his mind and body. It's why he has such dark circles under his eyes. Going into others' dreams does not mean that Somnum is restful, in fact quite the opposite. He suffers from insomnia and envies the deep sleep of those he encounters. He has no skill with physical endeavors and relies entirely on his crew to put enemies and rivals to sleep so he can use his dream powers.
Chef Kumo, the big fellow peeling the apple. He's eaten the Mist-mist fruit, a logia that allows him to turn his body into heavy fog. Usually he uses this to hide the ship to avoid contact with the military or to sneak up on other ships to pillage. He has tremendous defensive fighting capabilities but prefers to be cooking for the crew. He owes the captain a great debt and when Somnum is in a dream state, he won't leave his side. The more time Kumo spends with his captain, the stronger his feelings for him become.
First Mate Lyndie Longshanks in the bandana on the left, Somnum's childhood friend and a brilliant naval strategist and inventor. She is usually the one to devise the team's attack plans, accurately size up opponents and create weaponry. She uses a pair of hidden pistols that fire potent sleeping tranquilizer darts. In addition she has created many traps aboard the ship. She is not one to be caught unprepared.
Mister Hooks has a skull painted over his face. His use of ropes, harpoons and hooked weapons is nothing short of remarkable. He is short-tempered and wild. He has become adept at looping makeshift nooses around his victims' necks and choking them until they pass out. Has a tendency to rub his crewmates the wrong way, but is still a staunchly loyal member of the group.
Ambrose Grivas, user of the Bat-bat paramecia fruit, an immortal vampire who has recently decided to try his hand at piracy. Since the crew is mostly active during the night, he has created something of a kinship with them, and especially with Somnum. Like a true vampire, sunlight hurts him terribly and being exposed to it for very long will kill him. To alleviate this weakness, Kumo can create dense fog during the day around the ship, blocking out direct sunlight. In addition, Ambrose carries a custom-made umbrella which has a blade protruding from the end. He is an accomplished swordsman and canny combatant. He drinks blood, but not enough to kill, instead it makes his victims fall into a deep sleep. He considers the act of draining someone to the point of death to be 'barbaric.'
Tom, the crew's shipwright, is not mine. He disappears after being taken to Enies lobby, but in this fanon, Somnum intercepted the sea train and rescued Tom, adding him to his own crew and leaving the guards aboard the train with a dream of Tom falling overboard and being eaten by a sea king. In his gratitude, Tom joined and agreed to make a special ship for the Endless Sleep Pirates, one capable of traveling over the waves without making a sound. He is a large cowfish fishman with legendary strength. In the anime he is seen to actually toss a pirate ship into the air with one hand before hurling 3 masts into it before it landed again. The crew's brute strength when needed, though he prefers not to fight.
Doctor Hoo, a highly educated owlman from a distant forest island who happened to meet the crew when they had to make a landing on the beach for repairs. His curiosity often gets the best of him so he is happy to travel with an interesting bunch of rogues. He can fly, though not overly well. His specialty is a type of hypnosis he has perfected which can put multiple people into a dreamlike state. His chuckle is a 'hoo hoo!' which is where he received his nickname.

This is really nice -- at first I thought they're all official characters from some anime. You're very good at designing original characters.
I like the vampire gentleman in the back the most, he's got an interesting design. The owl and the guy with the giant mustache are cool too.
Always seems like your ideas would make fun anime series. :3

Thank you Squirrel! I love designing characters, it's so much fun, and it gives me a chance to come up with some interesting backstories while I'm at it. I like the vampire guy and moustache guy a lot too. :] Although I'm actually most proud of the captain. A simple idea, but I like the way he turned out!
I bet you that they celebrate all of their plunderings with a big pillow fight. But seriously, even if your graphic identity is still unmistakable, I think that you caught the spirit of Oda's characters really well. I am not going to digress about every member of the crew, but I wanted to say that they all look really nice. Especially the captain. I'm having a bit of a twinge of conscience, since it's related to an unfortunate part of his backstory, but the dark rings under his eyes and his half-asleep appearance are positively adorable. I'm also really fond of his outfit. This hoodie looks so comfy (the z-shaped aglets of the drawstring are an amusing and pretty clever detail) and the patterns on his trousers are just so cute. It's as if he was scouring the seas in his pyjama, that's so sweet*. The concept of his powers is also really interesting. It's rare that the captain of a crew is not a brawler. I wonder how the Straw Hat pirates would deal with them if they were to meet, assuming that they would be on opposite sides of course. Funnily enough, I also came up with a dream-dream fruit of my own some time ago. It gave its user the power to materialize the dreams of the people sleeping in its vicinity. It wasn't very practical and I never found how to make it work... But that's not the point. All I wanted to say is that, once again, I love what you have with your characters. They look so creative and colorful (which is quite a feat since the picture is entirely in black and white). I wish there was some sort of crea-crea fruit I could eat to become as inventive...
* Actually, it makes me wonder what kind of pirates they are. Are they friendly and easy-going like the Straw Hat crew, who are pirates in name only, or are they a bunch of ruthless crooks ? You talked about plundering, so they are at least slightly more brutal than the Straw Hat.

Ty! I have really grown to love the One Piece character designs, even some of the really ostentatious ones and wanted to make characters that belonged to that world! Haha, I think Somnum is adorable too. There's a lot in his past that plays into his inability to sleep for long. Happily the bonds with his crewmates are helping alleviate that somewhat. Yup, he is the scourge of the seas in his pyjamas and silent, mist-hidden ship. None of the Endless Sleep pirates have a bounty on their heads because they have never really been seen, or at least, caught red-handed. Makes them the most enigmatic crew on the high seas!
Yes, it is rare for a captain to have no physical prowess which is why I had to do it. But then, if you're asleep, and think you're awake, being soundly defeated by him while you're powerless to do anything about it, that sounds pretty impressive too. My initial concept was to introduce these guys as a stand alone OP movie. The Endless Sleep Pirates board the Thousand Sunny at night, we see each pirate using their sleeping techniques to either keep the Straw hats from waking or putting them to sleep. Very minimal fighting as they are caught unawares. Light robbery of their treasure (a pirate's gotta eat after all!) when Tom sees Franky and breaks down, seeing the cyborg body of his former son. Franky is brought back with them and in the morning when the Straw Hats awaken and are confused about the previous evening, initially dismissing that anything occurred. After the Straw Hats recount their dreams (all eerily similar) and Nami checks the treasure reserves, they begin to solve the mystery of what happened to Franky, while Franky of course is leaving breadcrumbs as it were. The Endless Sleep Pirates are not evil, but they do steal, and with the exceptions of Somnum and Tom, enjoy a good fight now and then. Somnum's reasons for being a captain are a bit different: he wants nothing more than a good night's sleep, and to completely leave his past behind him. To this end, he is trying to encounter the perfect dream, one which he can live in and be at peace. Of course this is Luffy's, the sheer thrill and childlike excitement of becoming the king of the pirates is just too much fun, too happy to ignore. At first Somnum thinks he can just keep Luffy in a perpetual sleep state, returning into his dream to refresh and become empowered, but that's when he learns just how obstinate Luffy's subconscious can be. Long story shorter, big dream fight sequence in which Somnum seems to have the upper hand but then can't convince Luffy's mind to accept what is happening to it and he becomes overpowered. Meanwhile the crews are fighting one another, you know how it goes, Straw Hats mostly getting the upper hand, figuring out how to avoid or fight back against the Endless Sleep Pirates' skills and abilities. Zoro vs. Ambrose is noteworthy, as is Robin vs. Lyndie, Franky and Tom coming to an understanding. After a very brief 'battle' Dr. Hoo and Chopper sit down and start talking medical studies together, becoming nearly immediate friends. Usopp is asleep nearly when the fighting begins, because I hate him. Mister Hooks is defeated by a thundercloud that Nami had hidden in Kumo's mist which surrounds the ship. Kumo's Mist-mist fruit powers can't be overcome by Sanji (or anyone) but once Luffy is able to break free of Somnum's control and is about to gum-gum beat the shit out of him irl, Kumo surrenders to protect his beloved captain. Very cutely I might add.
Lots of discussion all around, realizations to be had, and the crews find they have a lot of common ground. Somnum, with Luffy's direction decides to chase the pirate king dream on his own, and not try to live anyone else's but his own from then on. The Endless Sleep Pirates think this is a great idea and they sail off, reinvigorated. I intend for the Endless Sleep Pirates to appear again in the future, as allies, but perhaps being coerced into being adversaries again, and with newly found powers.
That's cool! The ability to manifest things from others' imagination would be a slick power! Perhaps it shouldn't be limited to sleeping, and can just conjure from that person's mind? I did look up the Dream-dream fruit before making Somnum, just to make sure it wasn't canon, lol! The idea of a frail captain whose crew is his entire support and set-up to use his powers was very appealing to me for whatever reason. I like a more symbiotic group dynamic I think.

Wow, did you really write all of this ? I'm actually starting to feel a bit guilty for making you write this long wall of text. I hope that it didn't take you too long, when I see the time I need to write those comments... Then again, English is not my mother tongue, so I guess that it's easier for you than it is for me... But I am digressing once again. It was really interesting to read. The proceedings and the circumstances of the battle are really appealing, and as you put it yourself, I love the symbiotic relationship that you have built between the crew and their captain. I don't know why either, but I like when the leading character of a formation plays a supporting role for its comrades rather than being the main fighter of the group. If I may ask you just one question, I was wondering when the altercation is supposed to take place in the timeline. The fact that you didn't mention Brook makes me think that it takes place slightly before Thriller Bark. There is also the fact that they are apparently struggling against a logia user, which seems unlikely after the arc of the Fishman Island... On a side note, the way you word it makes it sound like Kumo may have a crush on his captain. Is it what I think it is, or am I just seeing things (cute things) ? Anyway, I would definitely like to see more of these guys. To be honest, it took me some time to get used to Oda's art style, but now I really enjoy the wacky design of his characters.
By the way, thank you for the suggestion. That said, if the fruit allowed its user to materialize what the people around them are thinking of, wouldn't it be a bit too overpowered ? They would just have to have an accomplice, or even a whole crew, to think of what they want, and they would be able to summon everything they need. On the other hand, it would make a great power for a smart and insidious manipulator or for a storyteller, the kind of smooth talker who can put any image in your mind...
P.-S. : I had a doubt when I posted my first comment, so I checked on my side of things and it turned out that there is already a bat-bat fruit, http://onepiece.wikia.com/wiki/Batt.....Model:_Vampire . Apparently, it was designed by Oda himself, but it comes from a video game adaptation, so I don't know about its canonicity. It seems to work pretty differently from yours however, so I don't think that it's too much of a problem.

It poses no problem anyway since it's not like my characters would ever see actual OP canon usage. And I did find out about the bat-bat character after I already decided on a vampire for the team, but it said that games wasn't canon either so, no worries on my end. :]
The original meeting is meant to be before Thriller Bark, since that's where I am in my anime watching. I have no idea how ridiculously overpowered everyone gets. I'm sure it's crazy, as with all battle anime.
Yes Kumo definitely has a crush on Somnum, which he keeps to himself mostly because he's just like that. It's a major point of contention however as Ambrose also fancies Somnum and is not so shy about letting the captain (and Kumo) know about it. On his end, Somnum is flattered by both but wants to keep his ship running smoothly so tries not to acknowledge either of their advances too much. In truth, perhaps his inexperience in such things tends to make him avoid relationships. That and lacking parental figures growing up he never got to see what harmonious relationships could look like.
And no worries, nobody makes me write anything I don't want to. You asked and I have a lot to say about my characters when people actually show an interest. I'm also quite surprised that English isn't your native language: you write it very well.

Well, I guess that I hold my own pretty well in writing. Actually, I think that all of the comments I post here and there have really helped me to improve my level. When I see the difference between the first comments I posted on DA and what I am writing now, the progress is glaring. That said, I am still a calamity when it comes to speaking. You should hear me butcher every word with my horrendous accent...
On the other hand, it is a real pleasure to hear you talk about your characters. You have an amazing and very personal way to communicate all the love you have for your creations that I really enjoy. Now, I would be curious to see how the relationship between Somnum and the cook is going to evolve after the confrontation with the Straw Hat crew, and with the captain's new-found confidence. It would also be interesting to see, if they effectively return as antagonists, what powers they have developed during the timeskip, and how they are going to handle their rivals in the rematch. They could even have formed an alliance with other crews... As for the Straw Hat pirates, they have definitely become ridiculously powerful - especially the main trio of fighters, Luffy, Zoro and Sanji - but since the enemies that they are fighting are even more insanely destructive, you wont see any difference. Geez, talking about the show like this makes me want to watch it again. Where am I going to find the time to watch this monster of an anime ?
