You make some pretty awesome looking hyenas. They don't get enough love in popular media, despite being pretty awesome animals all told. (It's the lions stealing the hyena kills most of the time...)

The savannah is a rough place. Lions kill hyenas (and eat them) and vice versa, depending on the numbers on each side, and both of them happily steal from cheetahs.

It's probably less about kill-stealing and more about team-killing (apologies for the multiple gaming terms there). Rivals within the clan will kill each others' offspring, and there's been more than one recorded instance of siblings going at each others' throats straight out of the womb.

Kevin Richardson, the guy famous for snuggling with wild(-ish) lions, is also an avid hyena advocate and tried to do a series for A.P.'s "Growing Up _____" series to try and rehabilitate their image. Long story short: It probably ended up having the opposite effect. -_-

That sounds not that unlike other pack predators, really. We villanize animal predators without realizing just how HARD their lives really are. Making a living off killing is tough and most preds get the same "retirement" - death by starvation, disease, or other predators.

And the less competition there is the less likely you and yours will starve to death. It's walking a fine line between 'packmate' and 'rival'.

Within that class I still think hyenas are quite neat.

Don't get me wrong, I like hyenas. I just understand why the majority probably doesn't agree with me.

I also like Nickelback.

And I can just hear everybody with a yena' sona' fighting their gag reflexes as I make that comparison.

I'm not so sure the majority DON'T agree with you. 'yenas are pretty popular last I checked, even if (like with every other furry avatar) people don't know that much about the actual animals.

Nickelback is a different story, but I like some of their songs too. My tastes are hopelessly eclectic. ^.^
