Nathan as "Smokey the Bear" for a new generation.

At the moment the Eagle Creek fire, caused by a 15 year old and his friends setting off fireworks in a drought ridden forest is ranging in over thirty-three THOUSAND acres in the Columbia River Gorge and is under 10% contained as I write this. Sparks from the fire have crossed the Columbia river setting a few more hundred acres over here in Washington state. 900 firefighters are battling the blaze and some 200 persons have been forced to evacuate their homes.
As a Southwest Washington native it really does break my heart to see such destruction in the prettiest part of my home. It seems that thanks to the efforts of firefighters we've gotten off light (so far), but will still take years for the region to fully recover. The displacement of people as their homes are threatened by wildfires for a such a senseless reason... and it makes me spitting angry that it is for such a senseless reason!
However, as angry as I am, I'd like to try and focus on the positives. For it is all too easy to get lost in pessimism in such a horrible situation.
It would seem that we've gotten incredibly lucky all things considered, thanks to the tireless efforts of the firefighters. When stuff like this occurs folks often like to say "fuck people", but let us not forget the first responders bravely risking their lives to save people, their homes, the natural beauty and historical landmarks of the region. All the volunteers helping displaced people. Agencies such as the Red Cross are getting overwhelmed with donations of water from the general public who want to help.
In the words of Mr. Roger's mother "Look for the helpers." The worst of us caused this fire, but the best of us is on display fighting it!
