I also really liked the mask when I saw it. Plus the style and atmosphere of this work. Works depicting war scenes like this (without SiFi and positive, hero-like atmosphere) are kind of rare, but I find them quiet touching.
As for the many species: I think it would be manageable if one would switch from the concept of "one basic uniform plus individual parts" to a more modular concept of x many headpieces, y chest pieces, etc. that could all be interconnected.
