Marking the 40th anniversary of the Vulkan Express tourist train the Brothaltalbahn staged a Bahnfest over the weekend of 26th/27th August with a visiting steam locomotive from the Sauerländer Kleinbahn supporting the lines own Mallet steam locomotive 11sm.
A busy schedule of trains was maintained throughout the day with the Orenstein & Koppel 300bhp diesel hydraulic locomotives supporting the two steam locomotives and hauling trains on the Oberzissen to Engeln section of line. D1 is seen departing from Niederzissen where a historical exhibition had been arranged in the station.

The Brohltalbahn is a metre gauge railway between Brohl am Rhein and Engels in the Eifel. Still carrying some freight traffic the route is best known today for its tourist train, the Vulkan Express. http://vulkan-express.de/en/
In 1965 two new Orenstein & Koppel diesel hydraulic locomotives were delivered to the Brohltalbahn, replacing the steam locomotives. These two locomotives were given numbers D1 and D2 and remain in service today hauling the regular passenger trains of the Vulkan Express between Brohl and Engeln. A third identical locomotive numbered D3 was ordered in 1967.
