Sunday Sammich- Disney, Logic and The LGBT
Good Tuesday to you, lovely folkes of the furry fandom! May I say you're all looking scrumptious, today! Well, edible at least, right? *head tilts with a wry grin*
trying to get back on schedule with things here, it seems we have a bit of catching up to do. It seems to me that we can best do this with maybe another one of our delightful sammiches of content, yes/no? Something a little dry and bready, maybe some tasty meat-treats and then back again... maybe with a pickle on top. *chuckles* For those of you who feel like gherkin' off. *eyes big* Oo- that's a wicked one...
The pickle's been a long time coming on this one I think... *snofts, eyes drift a moment* N'some of y'all ain't gonna like it.
But anypoop, to the task at hand. As we missed our normal SUNDAY FUNDAY together, let's take a look at something together we normally reserve for those lovely moments we share to talk about the impact of those delightfully superstitious folkes out there upon our culture, in this case, the entertainment industry- more specifically, *drumrolls on her lap* DER HAUS OF MAUS!
Y'see, Disney™ has been making such a big stink for years now, every movie it seems, about how THIS time, they're serious. THIS time they're really gonna do it, drop the hammer and just make a gay character like it ain't no thaaaaang. *sighs, shaking her head* And every time, they've cowed out, bent over and gave in to pressure from a veeeeeeeeryspecific, very loud and very unpleasant group of people. Thus all we get are implications, fan theories and a bunch of grand-standing both pre- and post-release. A flamboyant LaFou, two people walking by in the background, one line of dialogue by some one-scene character which could be taken as something... That's their big show.
And that's sad. It really is... We can split an atom, fly beyond the moon, damn-near paint the human genome and yet, THIS is an issue to some people... *shakes her head*
*smiles broadly, eyes glinting* NOW- Something that's been itching at my pert little ass for quite a while now is the way our culture perceives "the gay". *sets her chin upon her cane* or just ANY sexuality or expression of gender identity for that matter... For whatever reason, be it cultural mores, outdated religious shysters or just plain fear of something we find different *eyebrow arcs* or maybe too familiar for comfort... anything outside of "the norm" of heterosexual monogamy tends to be viewed as "unwholesome" to certain people. *snofts* It's dirty, immoral, "not right for MY kids"... that sort of poppycock. Now, that sort of nonsense- and rest assured it IS indeed, nonsense, aside, it's always struck me as so very odd... Even if I were to play devil's advocate in this situation... and here comes the funny part...
Just where do these backwards scaredy-cat moral-crusaders think all those "abnormal" people come from? *chuckles* LGBT people don't just fall out of the sky. "The Gays" don't wander in from some fashion-conscious alternate reality. Transgenders don't teleport in from the dark dimension of sexual confusion. Asexual people, agender, bi-gender, genderqueer people, those darn millenials, none of them were whisked into being by magick rocks, wishing rings or alien super-beings. *grins broadly* They come from american homes, american parents and their good-old-fashioned, when 'murrica was great, 3.5 kid-having, Papi-knows-best pseudo-christian values. They go to american schools and american churches, watch all the same movies and listen to the same bands. *laughs* Every one of them, from the couple of lumbersexuals smooching in the back of the theatre to those weird fucks who do unspeakable things with farm animals and power tools... *ahem*... they- WE are all part of the same family, all raised in the same homes.
So what good is it really doing to try and cajole us? why pretend that what they, what WE are is somehow something that can be controlled? Metered? Changed? That's not how it works, lovelies. That's not how attraction works and it's CERTAINLY not how LOVE works.
*tches* Here's to hoping Disney, all of us, can maybe start seeing that bigger picture someday, sooner rather than later, preferably. The fan-fiction writers of today become the imagineers of tomorrow, sooner than any of us realize. Love yourselves and love each other, beautiful watchers. *raises her glass*

Ah... I remember talking about how Princess Jasmine prolly has like hundreds of slaves some of them girls a lot of them to be honest likely fully snipped in public only to hear a little girl say " mommy what's why does princess Jasmine have slaves?" To turn around and see a mother with child giving me a death glare. I just smiled and waited for her to explain, she did not I laughed she stormed off I vaguely felt bad for her.
*snerks* Again you raise the valid point of critique, love. Someday you and I simply have to go bar-hopping together, or at the very least pass out in an alleyway together. S'a reasonable substitute, I think.
I think I did a similar thing pertaining to the fact that Aladdin himself was stealing bread to survive, was guilted into giving it away to a group of similarly starving children... and yet the Sultan and Jasmine live in a golden palace which dwarfs the city in size. How the hell are these people the "good guys" of the movie? Or the TV series for that matter? How do parents explain this socio-economic issue and the implied morality away to their kids...?

*Wink* Would be a hell of time... and expensive Canada booze is a lot...
I think parents try not to think about that or at the very least think of it from this angle "If I work hard enough maybe my child can live in that kind of a world." At least in the sense that they can be rich and happy and also not need to worry about that, also other than one song where they mention prince Ali has slaves and servants who love him and that they love serving him. I mean most kids would kinda glaze over that part ya? And parents don't want to explain something like that, double so in america where Slavery is still a hot button issue. >.>
So If you want to think about it, Agrabah is really two cities, the imperial city where the sultan Jasmine and now Aladin live and the outer city where the poor and merchant classes live, in reality it isn't too far different from how some monarchies functioned in the first place.
The funnier thing you have to think about is that the Sultan isn't an idiot the guy has just had too many concussions from when he had to adventure to save his homeland, hell if you think about it Jafar was likely the one dealing with all the magical attacks and BS that kept coming at the city.

I still remember the stupid Southern Baptist boycott of Disney in the mid-late 90's over them having Gay Days at Disneyland and Disney World (something the LGBT communities in CA and FL set up so that gay couples and their kids could enjoy the parks without harassment, NOT DISNEY) and giving insurance benefits to same-sex couples employed at their parks. Disney didn't give a shit then, because the money was on the side of progress. I'd argue that it still is, despite the best efforts of shitheads like Pat Robertson, Alex Jones and Chick-Fil-A's Dan Cathy to make bigotry profitable.
Ty, love, you and I are sitting square on the same page. *smiles*
THANK you for that point about the much-lauded "gay days" at the parks. Often, I think folkes forget that those were initially begun as a grass-roots protest, not something Disney™ offered out of the goodness of their hearts. Not that the company hasn't gotten MUCH MUCH better over the years in standing up to bullies over the rights and respect of us all. They certainly have. It just aggravates the poop-zipperbiscuits out of me when people misrepresent that point.
Oh yes, also, as much as I like to hold to the notion of love for us all, fuck all three of those people, Pat Robertson in particular. Alex Jones is just a hemorrhoid that wished he could be a real boy and now he spends his time screaming at the blue fairy. As for DAN kATHY... UGH... Man's got a whole mess of hurting he funded to answer for. *snofts*

What about Bucky and Pronk Oryx-Antlerson from Disney's Zootopia? The hyphenated sirname was meant to imply the couple were Judy's gay neighbors. The characters were voiced by the movie's directors and their relationship was later confirmed by Jared Bush, voice of Pronk.
mnnhmn... Unfortunately, love, that would be one of the much bally-hooed couples who simply walked by in the background I mentioned in me info-rambling. It's a nice bit of fan-theorizing, cute that it was 'word-of-god' confirmed but it's not the same thing. *sighs sadly* Not even in the same ball park, really.
Any Disney™ exec could issue a press release today naming any past character as a practicing vegisexual/cannibal/Islamic fundamentalist and claim that it just happened off-screen and was never mentioned in the movie. Hell, the author of Disney's Snow White could claim that all seven dwarfs were pansexual and that I was their in-canon lover. I was in Snow White, just that I was never shown on screen, or mentioned. Same diff....

No offense taken. You be you, potatovoreaphile. : )
I understand what you're saying, though. I think we're still perhaps a ways off from an openly non-hetero main Disney character, but it's not the unthinkable possibility it once was and Zootopia just edged us closer. Little steps, Ellie.

You're awesome, love. *big squee face* We have to hang together sometime.
I mean that in the happy sense, as in "do fun semi-social activities together"... or maybe "utilize some manner of rope/chain-based suspension contraption for fetishist activity" ...nothing to do with lynching. *eyes roll* unless it's maybe David Lynch. He had some good movies .

*chuckles* Nothing wrong with any of that, love. I apologize if my forthrightness is inappropriate. As you've seen in my work, I am as is my work and Bondage and Domination are a bit of specialties in my home life. *smirks*
Well, you've probably also seen I'm a bit of a gamer meself. *laughs* Earlier tonight we did watch The Crying Game again- GREAT movie BTW- but since then I've been couch-sitting while Ahriman has been trying to pummel his way through Splatterhouse. Earlier I believe it was achievement hunting in Minecraft... Having trouble recalling.

Inappropriate? Um, lemme check... *scrolls up, back down* Yep, this is still Furaffinity.
Really, don't worry about inappropriateness. I frequent F-list myself. Hell its where I met my current boyfriend! :D

Haven't played Splatterhouse myself. I wasn't really a fan of the original. I'm more of an RPG nut myself. Playing the hell out of Final Fantasy XIV currently.

*smirks happily* Fine choices all, love. I'd side with you on "Mulan" in particular.
For my dollar, my three favorite Disney™ movies of all have actually only hit recently, that being the holy trinity of "Frozen", "Maleficent" and "Zootopia"... though I believe calling "Zootopia" a Disney™ film is a questionable matter to many.

Zootopia dethroned The Lion King as my favorite film... I guess because while TLK was a good story, it was just a retelling of Shakespeare in the end. Zootopia, on the other hand, just feels more...REAL... in what weird way that makes sense... The lesson I took away anyway, just seems more like something to learn from. from Bogo's comment about life not being a musical with a happy ending...to Judy's reconciliation with Gideon (complete with his parting comment that sounds like something a baptist would say about Pentecostals...) I loved the story from Frozen but I can't really say it's one of my favorites. I will say, however, that I sing along at full volume to Let It Go. but Mulan, I guess even back then I could feel something special about the song Reflection :)
This is the damn good point I think more people don't realize. Thank you for bringing it up.
I know I've had several colleagues tell me at some point or another that they were glad to have met me. Before they'd gotten to know me, all they knew about "people like me" was what they'd seen on TV. This is when they usually list off the usual suspects... Rupaul's Drag Race, South Park, GLEE, things like that. It always seems to take them by surprise to learn that... well... "Herms" do exist, for one*chuckles*... but moreso than that, "The gays" are in fact just like them, People. We burp, fart, pick our noses when we think no one's looking, watch horror movies and think things blowing up are awesome.
Who's have thunk it, right?

Some people are just jerks, love. I'm sorry.
Look at our family. Ahriman is bi, so is Dratis, I'm Pan, as is Sanita, Krissie is on the fence and in the mix of it all we have two cis folkes, one trans and one hermaphrodite and we all treat each other with love and respect.
I think my lovely Sanita said it best with her touch of wisdom- "Assholes are gonna ass".

It's that the christians view Jesus as white but Jesus is actually is black. So basically Europeans hijack Christianity into we all know today a white supremacy mess. It was originally part of the middle eastern religion until the Europeans arrived and twisted into a hateful society what it is today.
