I Told You

A Thursday Prompt Story

Prompt: stay



“I’ve told you, Reggie,” the white-tailed doe said. Her tone of voice was determined, but had a slight quavering edge to it as if she was either on the verge of tears or a screaming fit. “When we married, we both promised - before God - that we would stay together.”

Her left upper lip curled away from her teeth as her flag flicked back and forth erratically. “Remember that? ‘Until death do we part?’ Like I’d let that stop me.”

“And no, I’m not about to let you just walk out of here!” She paced back and forth, her hooves clacking on the polished stone tiles. “’Oh, but Willow, our fawns are grown now.’ ‘But Willow, you’re acting so oddly and you’re scaring me.’ Hah! I’ve never felt better in my life!” She paused and glared at her husband, as if daring him to refute her assertion.

But Reggie didn’t object, and Willow smiled sunnily.

The taxidermist had done a wonderful job, but speech was quite beyond his capabilities.
