"Photo-Op: Me In Monarch H.S., Coconut Creek, FL / 9-9-17"
For this latest edition of "Throwback Thursday", I'm only going back to last weekend, with an apropos 'photo-op' of yours truly in a very unlikely location - Monarch High School in Coconut Creek, Florida - along with hundreds of other evacuees, seeking shelter from the wrath of Hurricane Irma...
On Friday, September 8, 2017, I had just completed preparing my Margate condo apartment for Irma's arrival - expecting it to be a Category 3 or Category 4 storm. But, by the time the 5:00 PM advisory was announced, it had returned to Category 5 status (with winds of 155 miles per hour and greater gusts).
At this point, I'd decided to abandon my domicile, in favor of surviving in one of a number of emergency shelters here in Broward County. My brother Glenn was kind enough to drive me (and my supplies) to the nearest shelter, Monarch High School - where I'd spent the next 60 hours, resting in the school cafeteria (and getting free breakfast, lunch, and dinner).
I'd brought several changes of clothing, including two "Zootopia" T-shirts. I was wearing my 'Nick Wilde' tee, while on line for breakfast on Saturday morning, September 9th. A couple of kids saw what I was wearing, pointed at me, and shouted out "ZOOTOPIA!!!" (One youngster even said, "I saw it a lot of times!") It was a good feeling, being a morale booster for these children, who were experiencing their very first natural disaster, but felt relieved in my presence...
Or, as 'Nick Wilde' would aptly put it, "Hang in there!"
One of the people sleeping on an air mattress next to me (a doctor from Coral Springs), was able to use the camera feature of my Samsung tablet to take a picture of me, as well as some of the other evacuees in the cafeteria. Besides the people, the cafeteria had four HDTV sets, for everyone to follow the local news coverage of the slow-moving path of Hurricane Irma...
Shortly, I will have a complete follow-up to my "Tracking Irma" journal - http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/8400610/ - letting you know how all of us evacuees were able to weather the storm.
