Those You Care About
"I'm really sorry, Jeane."
Jeane turned her head to look at her girlfriend. The female pachirisu kept pace beside her as they walked down the sidewalk, her hands buried in the pockets of her jacket. Her shoulders were hunched, and her eyes were fixed firmly on the pavement in front of her.
Jeane tilted her head slightly. "Sorry about what, Kelly?"
"I'm sorry that... that I made you leave the party."
Jeane rolled her eyes. "Seriously? It's not a big deal."
Kelly kicked at a stray pebble as she walked. "But if it weren't for me, you would have stayed, wouldn't you?"
Jeane hesitated as she considered the best way to respond. It wouldn't be right to lie to her girlfriend -- she deserved the truth. "Yes, Kelly, if I hadn't been with you, I probably would have stayed at the party."
"You see?" Kelly blinked back tears. "I'm holding you back."
"Now, hold up, I wasn't finished. Yes, I like parties, and I like hanging out with people. But I also like you." Jeane took a step closer to Kelly, wrapping one arm around her girlfriend's shoulders as they walked. "Having a beautiful girl to go home with definitely influenced my decision to leave, and I have no regrets about that."
Kelly sniffled. "You mean it?"
"Of course. Sometimes you can do things that you aren't normally capable of when it's for someone you care about. That's life, that's a relationship. Yeah, I like parties, but I like curling up with my girlfriend on the couch and watching movies, too."
Kelly moved in closer to Jeane's side, wrapping her own arm around the espeon's waist. "Thanks, Jeane."
"No thanks necess--"
Jeane froze, stopping mid-sentence. Her arm tightened around Kelly's shoulders. Her large ears twitched, swiveling one way, then another.
At first, all she heard was the mechanical buzz of an overhead street lamp. There were no cars, no other people out on the street this late.
Then she heard it: the soft, almost-inaudible padding of paws against concrete.
She looked at Kelly. "You hear that?" She whispered.
"Y-yeah," Kelly said.
"Someone's tailing us," Jeane continued.
"Do you think it's someone dangerous?"
"Someone creeping around out here at night, trying not to be heard? I'd say it's a safe bet. Let's get out of here." Jeane took Kelly's hand and picked up the pace, going from a leisurely walk to a brisk trot.
Jeane tried to keep up a strong, confident face for Kelly, but this was bad. Whoever was following them -- they were staying downwind, so Jeane couldn't catch their scent -- was coming after them despite being outnumbered. That meant that, if Jeane was correct and this mysterious pursuer had it in for them, they were confident in their ability to take both of them. And since Kelly wasn't actually much of a fighter, Jeane might not stand a chance.
Jeane's ears twitched again. The steps were growing louder.
"They know we've noticed!" Jeane whispered. Her heart pounded in her chest as she broke into a run. "Come on!"
Kelly stumbled, still clutching Jeane's hand. "Jeane! I can't keep up!"
"Damn it!" Jeane swore, quickly taking in their surroundings. She noticed a small alley, almost unnoticeable in the shadows cast by the street lights. "In here! We'll hide!"
The inside of the alley was cramped; it would just barely be wide enough for the two of them if they stood shoulder to shoulder. And, to Jeane's horror, it ended in a metal fence. There was no way they had time to climb it, so they would just have to hide.
Jeane clapped a hand over Kelly's mouth, then ducked down into the shadows, pulling her girlfriend along with her. Crouching, every muscle in her body tense, she listened.
She heard the footsteps padding towards the entrance to the alley. At first, Jeane thought that maybe their pursuer hadn't noticed them hide, that they would just keep walking. Jeane and Kelly could then duck back out the other way and lose them.
Then a clear, feminine voice came from the alley entrance. "I know you're in there. Why don't you come on out so we can talk?" The pursuer's tone clearly told Jeane that she wanted to do more than just "talk."
Jeane placed a hand on Kelly's shoulder. "You stay here," Jeane whispered. "When she's distracted, make a run for it."
"What!?" Kelly's response sounded frantic.
But Jeane had already leaped to her feet, rushing towards the mouth of the alley. Maybe if she took their attacker by surprise, she could overpower her before she knew what was happening. Or, worst case scenario, she could probably use her forward momentum to push her out of the alley, giving Kelly a chance to escape. Gritting her teeth, she pulled her first back, ready to use her forward momentum to throw a powerful punch.
As she charged forward, Jeane got her first good look at her pursuer. It was a tall female meowstic with soft curves, wearing an off-the-shoulders shirt and a pair of jeans. She had one hand resting on her hip, and her eyes widened when she saw Jeane barreling towards her.
Jeane's heart sank. Her suicide charge had been doomed before it began. With nothing to lose, she stayed the course, swinging her clenched fist toward the meowstic's face.
Her knuckle stopped less than an inch from the meowstic's cheek. Jeane's entire body froze as an invisible field of power wrapped around it.
"Wow," The meowstic said. "You almost got me."
The psychic energy whipped Jeane to one side, slamming her into the alley wall. She let out a gasp of pain and crumpled to the ground.
Blinking the pain out of her eyes, Jeane climbed back to her feet. She reeled her arm back for another attempt at a punch.
This time, the meowstic didn't even let her start before using her psychic energy to freeze Jeane in her tracks. "What's wrong?" She asked. "You don't seem to have much psychic power for an espeon." With a flick of her mind, the meowstic hurled Jeane into the opposite wall.
Jeane coughed, fighting the urge to throw up. Her head swam, and her vision was blurry.
"Look, how about I offer you a deal, from one psychic-type to another?" The meowstic used her Psychic to pick Jeane up, lifting her into the air in front of her. "I'm really only hungry enough for one of you. You let me have that pachirisu that's hiding back there, and I'll let you go. Sound fair?"
Jeane's heart pounded in her chest. She clenched her teeth. "Over. My. Dead. Body."
"Fair enough," the meowstic said. "Let's get to it then, shall we?"
Kelly whimpered as she watched the meowstic throw Jeane around like a rag doll. She had no way to help her -- and she couldn't even run like Jeane had wanted, since their fight was blocking the narrow alley.
She should do something, she told herself. Go join in the fight, try to rescue Jeane. But what could she do? She wasn't a fighter. Her limbs were frozen, refusing to listen to any orders from her brain.
Then the meowstic snapped her fingers, and waves of energy sliced around the Jeane, shredding the espeon's clothes. The meowstic used her psychic power to lift Jeane high into the air, holding her ankles together and trapping her arms behind her back. She floated higher and higher, until she was over her attacker's head.
The meowstic opened her mouth wide.
"No," Kelly whispered, barely audible.
Jeane's struggling form began to lower. Her feet slid into the meowstic's mouth. With a wet gluk, the predator swallowed, and her throat bulged out.
"N-no." Kelly felt her voice crack.
The meowstic swallowed again. Jeane's knees and then her thighs slid into the meowstic's gullet, making a clear bulge on the front of her throat.
"NO!" Kelly shouted it this time.
Unfortunately, this just seemed to catch the meowstic's attention, because Kelly suddenly felt a psychic tug on the front of her shirt. It yanked her to her feet, then forward. She stumbled, almost falling, before realizing that she now had what felt like invisible chains around her ankles, keeping her rooted to the spot.
The meowstic gave another wet swallow, gulping down Jeane's hips, and Kelly suddenly understood. She wanted her to watch.
"Kelly!" Jeane shouted, as her stomach began sliding into the meowstic's mouth. "Run!"
"I can't!" Kelly shouted back. She tugged at her legs, but her feet remained glued to the ground. "She's got me trapped!"
"You've got to keep fighting!" The meowstic's muzzled reached Jeane's chest. She swallowed that up as well, leaving just Jeane's shoulders and head on the outside. "She can't keep her concentration up forever! When you get a chance, take it and run! I love you!"
"Jeane, please, don't...!"
But then the meowstic's tongue wrapped around the front of Jeane's face, pulling it backward, and her teeth clicked closed in front of the espeon's nose. She titled her head back and swallowed, and the large, wriggling bulge settled in her gut, causing the material of her shirt to bunch up just beneath her chest. She licked her lips.
"Mmm. Haven't had an espeon in a long time." The meowstic released a small belch, then turned her attention to Kelly. "Now for you... Kelly, was it? You two seemed kind of close to just be friends. This was your girlfriend, I take it?" She asked, patting her stomach.
Kelly swallowed, her heart dropping into her stomach at the use of the word "was."
She felt the meowstic's psychic chains release her ankles, and she found herself lifted into the air. For a moment, Kelly thought she was going to be bashed against the walls like Jeane, but she found herself being slowly floated over to the side of the alley instead, her back pressed against the brick.
The meowstic then positioned herself in front of Kelly and pressed her belly against the frightened female's face. The bulging mass pinned her to the wall, and she could feel Jeane's frantic movements inside as she fought to escape.
Kelly let out a frightened sob, trying to push the meowstic away, but her hands just sank into the soft belly. Her palm slipped over a hard, rounded edge, perhaps Jeane's shoulder.
"Can you feel her in there? She's really putting up a fight. Of course, that won't last long; pretty soon my stomach will get to work on churning her up. Aren't you excited to have a front-row seat?"
"N-no!" Kelly tried again to push the meowstic away. She actually felt the predator go slightly off-balance for a moment, only for her to then lean in harder. Beneath the meowstic's fur, Kelly could hear muffled shouts and screams.
Kelly's feet scrabbled against the concrete, and she realized that she was no longer being held by the meowstic's Psychic. She was pinned, yes, but only by her physical body. Either she thought she didn't need it anymore, or she had lapsed in her concentration.
"Maybe I should swallow you down, too? I bet you could calm her down," the meowstic said.
Kelly moved her back against the wall. She was fairly certain she could slip away from the meowstic. Maybe she could get away before the meowstic had realized her mistake; Jeane had wanted her to escape, after all. With an already-full belly, the predator might decide she wasn't worth pursuing.
But then she pictured sitting on the couch at Jeane's place, all by herself.
Could she fight back? Could she rescue Jeane? What if the meowstic was expecting it? What if she was just ruining her chance to escape? Her heart felt like it was about to pound its way out of her ribcage. She couldn't do this! She couldn't fight this monster!
"I can just imagine it," the meowstic continued, not noticing Kelly's internal struggle. "You in there, curled up with the one you care about, consoling each other during your last moments..."
Kelly froze. Clear as day, Jeane's words from just a few minutes ago played back through her mind:
"Sometimes you can do things that you aren't normally capable of when it's for someone you care about."
Kelly clenched her teeth, the vision of the empty couch appearing in her mind's eye. She wouldn't let that happen! She couldn't! She and Jeane were supposed to watch a movie together tonight!
"And then you'll get to be together forever," the meowstic said. "On my--"
Kelly braced herself against the wall and lashed out with her legs.
The meowstic let out a surprised roar of pain as she lost her balance completely. She stumbled backwards, dropping onto her rear end on the concrete. "Wha--?"
Before the meowstic could prepare another psychic attack, Kelly leaped forward, releasing a growl that surprised even herself. She grabbed the meowstic by the ears and yanked her forward, while at the same time swinging her own upper body in a powerful arc.
Their foreheads crashed together like two freight trains. There was a scream of pain.
Kelly's whole world turned into a dark blur as she reeled back, catching herself against the brick wall. She placed a hand against her throbbing temple, blinking to try to stop the alley from spinning.
When she regained her equilibrium, she saw the meowstic lying on her back on the concrete, unconscious. The light pouring into the alley silhouetted her thrashing belly.
Kelly's momentary adrenaline high vanished, and reality rushed back in on her. "Jeane!" Kelly shouted. She stepped forward, momentarily unsure of what to do. Then she knelt down next to the meowstic. "Jeane! If you can hear me, I'm going to try to push you out!" She leaned her weight into the bulge, trying to force it upward.
Jeane seemed to have realized that the tables had turned, because her random struggles became more focused. After a few long seconds, Kelly saw Jeane's fingers come out of the meowstic's mouth, gripping her jaw. Her arms came next, bracing her against the pavement as she clawed her way out of the meowstic's gullet.
Kelly came around to help pull Jeane out just as her head reappeared. "Hey girl," she said, smiling weakly. "Fancy running into you here."
"Jeane!" Kelly reached down to slide her arms under the espeon's to help lift her out.
After a few minutes, between the two of them, they managed to get Jeane completely extricated from her would-be predator. Jeane braced herself against Kelly, still a little wobbly, her fur completely soaked.
The meowstic moaned and tried to move. Jeane kicked her hard, causing her to curl up into a ball. "You'd better stay down if you know what's good for you," she shouted, sounding just a bit hysterical.
"C'mon, Jeane," Kelly said. "Let's get you home."
Kelly sat floor next to Jeane's couch, her knees curled up against her chest. From not too far away, the sounds of running water could be heard from the bathroom, where Jeane was showering to clean herself up.
Kelly whimpered, hiding her head between her legs, trying not to think about everything that had happened.
After a few minutes, the water stopped, and then Jeane walked out into the living room, wearing a bathrobe.
"Kelly?" Jeane asked. "Why are you sitting on the floor?"
"I, um..." Kelly hesitated. "I was waiting for you."
"Well, I'm here now." She sat down on the couch and patted the spot next to her. "Come on."
Kelly stood up, but she didn't sit down on the couch.
"Okay," Jeane said. "What's wrong?"
"Nothing."
"Don't 'nothing' me. Why are you just standing there? What's the problem?"
"I, um..." Kelly paused, but Jeane just stared at her, waiting. Finally, she lowered her head. "I'm scared, okay?"
Jeane tilted her head to one side. "Of the meowstic? Trust me, she's not gonna bother us again, not after the number you pulled on her."
Kelly shook her head. "No, not of her. Of..."
"Yes?"
"Of me," Kelly whimpered.
"You're scared of you?"
Kelly nodded. "I've never... I've never attacked someone like that before. It was like I was watching someone else controlling my body. I didn't think I'd even be capable of something like that."
Jeane smiled. She stood up, wrapping her arms around Kelly and holding her close. "Kelly," Jeane said, "you know what you were tonight?"
Kelly closed her eyes and took a deep breath, inhaling the scent of Jeane's shampoo. "What?"
"You were fierce," Jeane said. "You moved without hesitation to defend someone you care about. You saved my life. And I am so, so proud of you."
Kelly tilted her head up to look Jeane in the eyes. "R-really?"
Jeane took the opportunity to lean in and give Kelly a kiss that was long, soft, and full of love.
"Really."
Kelly felt a smile creep across her face.
"Now," Jeane said, "I believe I owe my knight in shining armor a movie night. Shall we?"
Jeane sat back down on the couch, and this time, Kelly sat next to her. With a happy sigh, Kelly snuggled into Jeane's side, finally exactly where she was supposed to be.

I think the last story I wrote with a happy ending for the prey was my Hot Bath story from about a month ago. So not too long, but it certainly isn't something I write a lot.
