Mike was lying with his head on the bottom-left corner of his pillow, nearly his entire face covered by blankets aside from his nostrils. One of his floppy ears had fallen over his face and served to block the sunlight from his eyes. The goat snuffled in his sleep, kicking one hoof against the mattress unconsciously before rolling over onto his back, his mouth hanging wide open and his tongue dry.
A loud, melodic tone suddenly filled the room from the surprisingly powerful speaker of his cell phone. Mike cracked his eyes open instinctively, seeing nothing at first aside from the blurry stucco on the ceiling before his eyes adjusted to the dimly-lit world around him. Turning on his side, he thumbed the ear out of his face and smacked his lips, grimacing at the sour taste of morning breath in his mouth. His long fur was ruffled to the point where he looked more like a shaggy bath-mat than a living thing, and he was long overdue for a haircut, the mop of hair on his head almost long enough to eclipse his horns.
Mike reached over for his phone as it buzzed and sang energetically from the box next to his bed. Without the coordination to grab it, he slapped at it impotently until it toppled to the ground face-up, the light of the screen far too bright. Shaking himself awake, he rubbed one hand across his face and picked up the phone with the other. While Mike had expected to find an alarm he’d forgotten to turn off, it instead was an early-morning call. Part of his brain told him to ignore the call and go back to sleep, but that part was lagging too far behind the rest of his body to do anything about it. Mike quickly stabbed the green icon with his thumb and brought the phone up to his head, tucking it under his floppy ear.
“Hello?” was what Mike thought he said, but in reality, it came out of his mouth closer to “Hhhwho?”
“Hullo?” said a faint voice from the other end. “I can’t see anything.”
“Hwhuht?” Mike groaned, blinking in sleepy confusion. “See?”
He pulled the phone away and found, in place of a caller-ID or keypad, a white-furred face with a dark nose filling the screen. No wonder his alarm had sounded different: it was a Skype call.
“Oh,” Mike grunted, laying back down and holding the phone high above his head. “Hey.”
“Hello my goaty love,” said the otter, smiling down on Mike from the phone like the face of an angel. “Sleep well?”
“Kinda,” Mike mumbled, rubbing sleep out of his eyes with his free hand. “Still tired.”
“Poor goat,” Kai said. He paused for a moment before grinning mischievously and saying, “Show it to me.”
“Right now?” Mike groaned, holding the phone closer while checking the time. “It’s early over here.”
“But it’s already mid-day over here,” Kai said. “I’m having lunch and I wanted to see you.”
Mike yawned, covering his mouth with the back of his hand. His eyes watered, tears darkening the copper-red fur around his eyes. He paused, looking up at Kai’s face on the screen, then sighed and kicked away the bedspread to expose his round, swollen middle. Mike sat up as best he could, looking down at his pregnant middle, and instinctively rubbed his palm against the thinning fur on its surface. He hadn’t gotten as big as he was afraid he would, but his belly was denser and heavier than he could have ever imagined.
“Can you see?” Mike asked, pulling the phone back and waving it around the room.
“Too dark,” Kai responded. “Flip a light on.”
Mike sighed and dropped the phone on the bed, then leaned across to the lamp he’d put on the bedside table for the explicit purpose of not needing to stand once he’d gotten bigger. The light was dim and yellow, but it seemed brighter than the sun to his sleepy eyes and Mike winced after turning it on. After blindly pawing for his phone, he sat up and shoved a pillow below his sore back, then began to wave the phone’s camera around his belly, filming it from above like a helicopter over a mountain landscape.
“There it is!” Kai squealed excitedly from the phone at the sight of Mike’s rounded, furry belly.
“Yep. Still in there,” Mike said flatly, switching the phone to his other hand to give Kai a look at the other side. He patted his right hand against his taut stomach, feeling resistance against his fingers that was the major ‘tell’ that he wasn’t just carrying around extra fat. That and the relentless kicking from the kid inside him. That usually gave him away.
“Look how big you are!” Kai continued to coo excitedly from the phone. “You can’t have more than a few weeks left.”
“Yeah, you say that…” Mike said, pulling the phone away from his belly to look Kai in the face. “But that’s what everybody else said last month.”
“True,” Kai admitted, nodding as he switched his phone to his other hand. “I suppose there isn’t much different between the last two months, is there?”
“Not when the father is almost a foot taller than you are and the baby inherits that,” Mike said, rubbing his stomach. He paused, then added, “Well, the other father.”
“Sorry,” the otter grinned sheepishly. “Couldn’t really help that.”
“It’s not your fault,” Mike said turning on his side and resting a hand over his swollen middle. “But that doesn’t mean I won’t complain about it.”
“Grumpy goat, you are,” Kai snickered.
“The grumpiest,” Mike nodded, feeling a stir from the baby. He froze, waiting for more movement from inside him, then relaxed when none came. “Whew. Damn. Thought I woke him up for a sec.” He ran his fingers down the front of his gravid middle before he found what he’d long-ago identified as the baby’s foot. “He’s not as fucking lazy as I am. Always on the move whenever he’s awake.”
“He didn’t get that from me, either,” Kai said. The otter, who was sitting at a table, shuffled on the other end of the camera and set the phone down against something, then leaned his head into both his hands. “Show me more! More belly!”
“Uh-uh,” Mike shook his head, patting his stomach off camera. “Show’s over for now. You wanna see more, come in person for it.”
“I’m trying,” Kai groaned, hanging his head. He was far enough away from the camera that Mike noticed he’d dyed his long hair a shade of blue that reminded him of swimming pools in the summertime. “I’ve sent in the application already, I just need to hear back from them.”
“It’s like they don’t even have visas for when you knock someone up overseas,” Mike shook his head and sighed exaggeratedly. “That’s weird.”
“I can’t wait to get my hands on you,” Kai said, looking up into the camera with a twinkle in his eye. “You’d better not pop before I get back to the States.”
“I think that’s up to your kid in here,” Mike said, glancing down at his belly.
“Our kid,” Kai said. “…Or otter pup.”
“He swims and flips like an otter,” Mike said while scratching his chin, “but kicks the shit out of me like a goat. So who knows what the fuck’s gonna come out of me?”
“A little hybrid thing, maybe,” Kai said. “I can’t wait to meet him.”
“…Yeah…” Mike said, putting the phone aside to look down his belly. “Yeah, me either.”
“But before that,” Kai added, “I want to enjoy you while you’re big and round.”
“Of course you do,” Mike said. He put the phone down and used both hands to slowly push himself upright on the bed, his legs hanging over the side and hooves just barely touching the carpet. He panted and felt blood rush to his face as the weight of his baby belly shifted back into his lap, forcing his thighs to spread slightly apart under it. “Fuck me…” he swore while rubbing his palm through his fur. “I’m really getting goddamn heavier by the day…”
“Fat,” said Kai’s voice from the phone.
“Shut up,” Mike bleated. With both hands free, he massaged either sides of his belly, trying to relax the sore muscles that had been stretched to their limit by the growing baby inside of him. His sleepy brain faded away into a daydream, leaving the goat staring off into space while stroking his hands around his stomach like a crystal ball.
“Michael?” Kai’s voice crackled from the phone. The pregnant goat snapped out of his trance, blinking like he’d just been hypnotized.
“Sorry,” he answered, picking up the phone. “I kinda drifted off.”
“You’ve been doing that a lot lately,” the otter said. “What are you thinking about?”
“I dunno. Nothing, really.” Mike touched his belly again. Barely a moment went by without one of his hands on it. “What it’s gonna be like having a fucking baby. What’s like being…uh…being pregnant.” Mike swallowed and flapped his tail anxiously. Saying it out loud, even to Kai, still sounded so bizarre.
“How do you feel?”
“Uhh…Like…” Mike paused to think, looking down at the red-furred belly that filled his lap, where somewhere deep inside slept his son. “Like it’s kind of real and not real at the same time. Like it’s gonna turn out to be fake or…or something…Which sounds crazy because it’s obviously fucking not.”
“Obviously,” Kai agreed.
“I think it’s not gonna really hit me until the baby’s on his fucking way out of me, yknow?”
“I understand.”
“I don’t know, it’s a weird feeling.” Mike paused, then groaned and flopped back on the bed, his belly shaking as he did. “Ugh I’m just goddamn…fucking…fat and huge and sore and I wanna give birth already but I’m also fucking scared as hell about it and…” Mike made a sound between a long, pained moan and a bleat.
“I know you are,” Kai said soothingly. “But…don’t pretend you don’t like it a little, too.”
Mike huffed and blushed somewhere under his fur, reaching down to trail his fingers around his gravid belly, brushing against his navel popped outward from the pressure behind it.
“Sometimes….it’s hard to. But…uh…I uh…” The goat took as deep a breath as he could, feeling his heavy pregnant belly rise and fall under his hand. The kid inside him pushed out a foot hard enough to make a little furry lump appear on him. “…I do kind of like it.”
“That’s a good little breeder goat,” the otter teased.
“You suck,” Mike said.
“Would you feel better if I volunteered to carry the next one?”
“There’d need to be a next one. Can I at least get this kid out of my belly before we start thinking about another?”
“Fine, fine. If you say so.” Kai sighed into the receiver, his breath fogging the camera slightly and crackling the microphone.
“Okay,” Mike suddenly said to not really anybody. He grunted and sat up again, then picked up the phone and leaned it against the base of the lamp, the camera facing the room. “Wish me luck. I’m gonna try to stand up.”
“I can’t wait to see this,” Kai said, sitting back in his chair and folding his arms.
Mike shuffled as far forward to the end of the bed as he could, spreading his hooves wide apart for extra balance. He wrapped his arms around his belly and rocked back and forth, gradually building up momentum. After roughly thirty seconds, Mike clenched his teeth and lurched forward as hard as he could and staggered to his hooves, stumbling slightly. He nearly fell back over again, but braced himself against the bedside table and caught his balance.
“Fuck fuck goddamn...shit...fuck...damn it,” Mike swore as he stood up straight and felt the weight of his heavy, pregnant belly pull him down. He rubbed his hands against his back and winced as he leaned back, breathing like he’d just been jogging due to the way his lungs were being squished by the baby. Mike leaned back slightly, stretching his back muscles, as Kai watched the pleasing sight of the goat’s belly being pushed even farther out.
“Are you okay?” Kai asked.
“I’m fucking sore everywhere,” Mike grumbled, reaching over and picking up the phone from the table. “I feel like an over-ripe banana.”
“Oh, you’re definitely ripe,” Kai snickered.
“…I walked right into that one, didn’t I?”
“You did.” Kai said. “Now go put a shirt on, you trash goat.”
“Why bother? None of them fit.”
“Exactly…”
Mike rolled his eyes, but nevertheless waddled awkwardly across the bedroom and reached down into his drawer to pull out the first shirt that touched his fingers. It fit over his head and shoulders as effortlessly as it always did, but stopped short just above his ribs, the fabric bunching together atop his stomach. He could try to tug it down a little to cover his wide middle, but he knew from experience it was useless to even try and didn’t want to ruin one of his favorite shirts in the process.
“There,” Mike said, holding the phone as far out as he could and tilting the camera up and down. “Happy?”
“God yes,” Kai said. “You’re my big pregnant eye-candy today.”
He was a bit shameless about it, but Mike appreciated how openly attracted to his body Kai was. It felt good to be someone’s object of desire sometimes, especially if that person was still attracted to you after knocking you up.
“Now show me some more of that goat gut before my lunch break is up,” Kai said. “Put the phone on the ground between your feet.”
“Hooves,” Mike corrected him. “And no.”
“No fun.”
“Trust me, if I put the phone done there, I don’t think I’d be able to pick it up again.”
“That’s the point. And yes, I am trash.”
“Didn’t need to tell me twice.” Mike paused, then passed the phone into his left hand and held it by the top with two fingers and began to pan down around his belly, turning in place like a model to show it off. “Here, settle for this.”
“Eeeeeeee, you’re so huge!” Kai squealed in excitement.
“And that’s your kid in there, dude,” Mike said, smiling to himself. “Be proud of-” As the moved the phone back, the goat misjudged the size of his own belly and knocked it out of his hand and to the floor. “Fuck.”
“What happened?” asked Kai’s voice, muffled against the carpet where it had landed face-down. “I can’t see anything.”
“Dropped the phone, hang on.” Mike braced one hand on the dresser and clenched his teeth while squatting straight-down and reaching past his gravid belly to pick up the phone. With his stomach hanging low and slightly below his knees, the goat held his breath while trying to snatch small rectangle from the floor, finally succeeding on the fourth try and standing up again.
“Thank god you didn’t see that,” Mike panted.
“Maybe for you.”
“Even after putting a baby in me, you want to see me suffer?”
“Of course,” Kai said, smiling devilishly.
Before Mike could respond, a sudden series of quick jabs from his belly caused him to jump in surprise. He put a hand against his stomach, feeling as the little otter-goat inside him began to turn in the cramped confines of Mike’s womb.
“Uh oh,” he said. “Somebody’s awake.”
“Is he?” Kai’s eyes lit up as he picked up his phone and held it closer to his face. “I wish I was there to feel.”
“Then come back before I pop,” Mike said. He glanced down at his belly and added, “I think you’re running out of time.”
“I’ll do my best,” Kai nodded. “Keep that belly safe until I’m there to see it, alright?”
“You know I will,” Mike smiled. Kai brushed a lock of blue hair out of his face and grinned back. “If anybody was going to knock me up, I’m glad it was you,” Mike said.
“You’re too sweet,” Kai smiled. “You trash goat, you.”
“Always am,” Mike nodded. “See you soon.”
“You too,” Kai nodded. “Both of you.”
With a chime, the call ended, the otter’s face replaced with the time of the call. The goat sighed in the quiet, already feeling lonely. The baby kicked hard straight down into his bladder, distracting Mike out of his thoughts.
“Alright, alright, goddamn,” Mike said to his belly. “Let’s get you fed before you try to kick my ass from the inside.”
