I do not use any 3D (unluckily, that would help me) but I do use the mattepaiting technique. I use a lot of photos as reference and merge many textures into the drawing.
Also, I tend to work in greyscale... you don't have to worry about colours, you can add them in the final stage. It helps quite a lot because you can focus directly on the subject.
For example the ship was created by merging various parts of different ships from different videogames. :D

It looks pretty much the same, besides that additional engines around the Ramp :D Even the Shape and the Mainengines are the same :D
But I heard elsewhere (don't know where it was) that it is also from somewhere else. Can't remember anymore.
