If you look at Mickey's choice of attire, you may recall that it's a throwback to the Fantasia segment "The Sorcerer's Apprentice".
Combined with Mickey's simplistic design and juvenile appeal, it gives you an impression of what kind of demographic Walt Disney, "the Real Sorcerer", succeeded in attracting. Not just children, either. Walt made Mickey to represent the common innocence human beings have no matter how young and old we are. Mickey, or the innocence he stands for, can be naive and misguided, but no matter the challenge, he always means well and comes out on top to triumph over adversity.
Maleficent, on the other hand, she's just a cynical old jane-off who curses baby girls to commit suicide and save them the trouble of experiencing things that would complicate or enrich their lives... like marrying a prince... who would stalk them in the woods.
Maybe there is a reason as to why they made Maleficent more sympathetic in the recent live action movie...?
