Helianthus petiolaris, Prairie Sunflower, Great Sand Dunes, late summer.
One of my favorite photos from the recent (and much needed) camping trip to the Dunes. When I first stepped into the sands, the sense that life was not supposed to be here was overwhelming. It was this ominous presence, (which was also a little disturbing, considering how many people were out there). On occasion we'd hit a patch of vegetation, a reminder that life is resilient, and then again back to the other extreme upon finding a wilted plant or dead bug. It's very much a push and pull here! I took one evening to venture off by myself, get away from the crowds, and sit with the unsettling sense that I was getting from the place. During that adventure I came across this patch of sunflowers, a burst of life flowing into the sands.
