A move from 1997, Here's the scene I was referencing https://youtu.be/U-b1RGU8xZU?t=52
This is super neat. I spent summers in HK with family and I remember seeing the Walled City from above when flying into the old Kai Tak airport as a kid in the early 90's before it was emptied out and demolished. We walked past the outside perimeter before, but through the eyes of a child, I didn't know what it was, and it didn't look especially different from any of the other crammed city blocks at the time in that part of town.
Have you seen the photodocumentary book called City of Darkness: Life In Kowloon Walled City, by Ian Lambot and Greg Girard?

This is actually a super cool account and I neglected to reply earlier. I envy your situation of getting to experience that thrilling kai tak approach and being able to walk past the walled city area in Kowloon before it was turned into a park. I don't actually have the book for city of darkness, but my favorite photos of daily life within the city were taken by those two photographers :D So I guess I've seen excerpts from the book.
Pretty crazy how densely packed the people there were. While Manila in modern times is typically referred to as the most densely populated city at around 40K/km², the walled city was equivalent to 1.2 MILLION/km² @_@ insane. Can't imagine what that'd be like if it was larger than the 2 1/2 hectares it was.

If you're fascinated by the walled city, I'd dare suggest the 2014 book is still in print, and worth the $100 (it's a reprint of the 90's book, with more interviews and photos). It's full of interviews from people who lived there, as well as pontificating, and the full history of it's evolution. It goes a long way from dispelling the myths that outsiders have popularized in the media over the decades. Also great material for worldbuilding!
