Her adopted son lost his temper after the death of his aunt/alpha.
It was believed she was murdered, and Ziro became obsessed in finding her killer, to the point where he was neglecting his own health.
Spirit tried to stop him and talk him into coming back to the den during a thunder storm, telling him he wouldn't be able to catch any scents in the storm and that he would get sick if he remained in the rain. He refused, making Spirit grab his tail in an effort to stop him, but it just made matters worse, and before he knew it he was biting her muzzle so she'd let go. He regretted it right after.
