Stormslegacy the BJD
Raow! I has my own mini-me!!!
She debuted at AC, and spent a good amount of the con perched on my head. She'll be getting wings and a tail shortly. She is fully posable (even her adorable toes!) she has switchable eyes and her headcap can be put on backwards to show dismay.
The base was sculpted and cast in resin by the talented
blitzava This was one of the first ever casts, and for being a "junk" cast, she came out quite nice. Blitz and I will probably be working together to create more finished pieces that will be for sale to the public. For the record (since I've been asked) this one is not for sale. It was a gift to me, and honestly, for the price I would part with her you could have a sell-quality cast with a custom job that's much better than this. I do custom work on dolls, average price will be $50 starting, depending on complexity.
She has a rub or two on the claws and paws that I will be fixing. I am getting in the professional sealer used by BJD makers. I am amazed that the quickie coat of fixative on her held up, as she was played around with by so many people at anthrocon. She was used as the example doll, and was poked, prodded and posed by no less than 100 people or so. The fact that the rubs only appeared on the claws, pawpads and eartips is testament to how well resin takes color.
She was colored with about 20 layers of pastel, with acrylic paint used as accents. The gray on this one was done with acrylic.

I know!!! They're totally worth the pricetag though, and I can't understand why she charges so little considering how much work these guys take...I can attest as I've worked with her throughout the sculpting and casting process, learning the basics myself. After casting each piece needs to be individually worked and drilled...it's crazy time-consuming.
The joints are sculpted balljoints which have been drilled, and an elastic is strungthroughout the doll to give it the tension needed to keep the joints posed. THe joints have locking mechanisms to help them stay in natural positions.
I can't claim credit for that though, it was
Blitzava that made the blank doll for me to work with ^_^

what is a BJD? sounds like Blitz used an existing design of dolls for the making of her creation... sort of like the Brickheads figures were inspired by them little LEGO guys. :)
anyway, not to accuse of theft or anything, but I'm still curious. we import the crudest shit from the US but sometimes the awesome, funny, interesting, stuff stays in the US for whatever reason. :P
looks curious, playful, funny. a bit like "brainnssss...". XD or like, "You just stay here while I attempt to grab your muzzle" or soemthing. "Cookie MINE!" is possible,. too.
I can imagine now why everybody wanted to play with it. ^^

Actually, ball-joint is a style of doll, it's like saying "fabric doll" or "fashion doll." The concept is not original but the actually molding of the joints, how they work, etc. is individual to each maker. Kind of like how action figures have similar joints but if you buy from two different companies you'll notice that the articulation is different.
There's a whole community surrounding these types of dolls (namely, the asian ones themed after anime style.) Anthro BJDs are uncommon, and ones with digitigrade legs even less so. So not any more copying than a furry artist that draws anthros XD (not that I think you're are accusing of course, just saying, in case anyone else reads and gets the wrong idea)
It's a tight-knit community but I'm pretty sure there are a lot of collectors in Europe too. The forums are international, there are members from UK, Korea and others, Germany too I'm sure. The dolls themselves are insanely expensive for some of the nicer quality ones, collectors typically expect to pay $3-500 for an okay quality, unpainted mass-produced doll, much higher for some of the artist sculpts. The point of the whole thing is to customize your doll to create your own character; everything, including the eyes and hair is completely interchangeable, so you can order several pairs of eyes for the same doll so that you can switch them out according to your mood. Most wear wigs, but my anthros don't have hair =P
It's like having my own action figure...I've always dreamed of that LOL. I'm going to make clothes for her so that we can dress the same for cons. The wings and tail are going to be attached via super-strong earth magnets so they can "pop" out of the clothing without me worrying about sewing holes! I intended the pic to be of her running for a hug, or jumping out of a bush yelling "surprise!!!" I do see the zombie aspect...I totally need to grab some of the others from Blitz and do a scene XD

so BJD means ball joint doll... never ocurred to me. somehow these are really new to me. then again, most figures on german markets are either (uselessly) posable character figures or too ugly to look at them. there is probably a market... have to check it out one day.
but it sounds interesting and DO WANT. whcih means I put Blitzava on my watch list to poke her for soemthing when the time is right. I'm thinking of Hamamelis and Kornblume combo. XD
I've wondered how all her digitgrade legged figures stand. there seems no support at all. ^^ well, gotta ask her myself. :)
ah, customizable dolls. I've tried to poke Wolf-Nymph into converting a Barbie™ doll into her fursona lookalike including wings, but to no prevail so far. I would kill to have one... we have enough politicians who need to be stopped. nobody would notice anyway.
*cough*
comparing making, design and prices, 3-500 green for an unpainted mass product sounds pretty much. then again, in the model car collector's scene you pay for names rather than for model quality. names like Matchbox, Corgi, Dinky, Schuco, Märklin, can all be pretty steep in prices, and tin-plate model cars can bring insanity-inducing prices even. I'm happy to have been able to afford some which were rather unknown makings, or had seen better days but still look good.
a Legacy lookalike doll? a 'Mini-Me' sotosay? people will flock like sheep around you two. :) hehe, magentically attached assets sounds like a great idea. ^^
a scene would be awesome! I have seen some of her crowds, and they look adorable! ^^

I saw how this started out at Blitzava's table and it's progression is just fantastic!! The coloring job has added so much more to the character!! People,(word to the wise) you better get these while you can because, in the not too distant future, they're gonna be "Antiques-Roadshow", collectible as hell!!
