                    These are a side discharge design, as can be seen in http://www.railfaneurope.net/pix/de.....5-2006_285.jpg whereas most US and UK designs are bottom discharge types.
Bottom discharge hoppers are in service to, but this side discharge style was introduced in Germany in the 1930s, so a lot of locations are equipped to receive coal and ore from side discharge rather than bottom discharge hoppers.
