A map of the Highland republic in 834 A.W. Note the inclusion of Callentine, as well as large exclusionary zones in the north and south; while these regions are widely considered as "territory" of the Highland Republic, they are, in reality, lawless frontiers. A constant effort to settle these territories is under way, but it will take many, many years before they are as developed as the densely populated coastline provinces.
EDIT: It is worth noting that the approximate area of "settled" terrain is roughly equivalent to that of the Latrano Union; most of the Republic is empty space, roamed only by bandits and home to a few dozen micro-states that scarcely know they are within a much larger nation.
Starting north...
Northern Frontier Zone: Current military designation N-1, this zone is the largest province in the Highland Republic, and the least populous. Famous for its brutal winters matched only by those of northern Lupinia, and for its barbaric inhabitants, the Skovar, this lawless section is largely accepted as "wasteland" by most of the civilized world. Few venture into the dark depths of this rugged country, and even fewer return, fewer still with their sanity.
Kaindral Province: Once called "Skovenii", this former Lupinian colony suffered invasion at the hands of General Kaindral, a brutal warlord that best exemplifies the Highland way of thinking. The deep-water ports make the few cities in this province critical economic locations for trade and fishing in and around the Neverend Pass. The people who call Kaindral their home are weathered, hard-bitten frontiersmen and women who don't often rely on help from Acre. Long winters often leave the roads south blocked with snow, so these people often are left to fend for themselves if they should ask for help anyway.
Lao-Tso Province: Named after the king who once ruled the penninsula, this rocky finger of land is home to the Highland Navy, and is the keystone of the Highland Republic's defense network.
Warsaw Province: The oldest province in the Highland Republic, the cities in Warsaw have been built upon the ruins of older kingdoms. It was here that the first gray-clad Legionnaires first raised the Flame, and it was from here that the Movement ceased to be and the Highland Republic was born.
Northern/Southern Agricultural Province: Scarcely able to hold the title "province" in Highland terms, these sections of the Republic are valued mainly for their fertile soil and fair weather. Warm, moist air travels north off the Endeavor Sea, and when it collides with the cold air traveling down south off Melbourne's Sea, there's a nearly constant supply of fresh rainwater to grow crops in. The danger of cyclones is ever-present, but the Highland affinity for heavy concrete construction limits the real danger from this meteorological phenomenon.
Acre: The capitol province and city of the Highland Republic, Acre is the largest and most densely populated city in the Republic. It seats the Senate, the High Magistrate, the War Academy, and the Chancellor's Office within a massive fortified complex appropriately named the Citadel, which overlooks the sea from atop massive granite cliffs. The curious merging of broad, straight roads, historic structures, and geometric concrete buildings mark this city indelibly with the unique blend of efficient uniformity and old-world tradition that has come to symbolize the Republic.
King Roheo Province: The story of King Roheo is unknown, but his name somehow lives on. This province was once a loose federation of principalities under a similar name, but was swiftly annexed by the Highland Republic after its creation in the sixth century A.W. It is home to many thousands of silk plantations, and it was here that Grandfather, founder of the Movement, lived and tended to his crops.
Southern Frontier Zone: For the second time in as many years, the Southern Frontier Zone was refused Province status in 828A.W., not because of issues related to populated colonial cities, but of security. Ongoing conflict with raider covens and bandit troupes has led to the removal and resignation of more than a score of Colonial Governors since the territory was marked in 790A.W. The most aggressive foe facing Republic forces in the region are a band of thugs known as the "Lawbringers", named so in mockery of what the Highland Republic represents. These yellow-clad ruffians do their best to interrupt and disturb colonial efforts, making off with slaves and stolen property to sell on the black market.
Southern Colony: Now called "Callentine", an ancient word meaning "The Small who Conquer", this rogue state cast off Highland rule just before the turn of the century in the late 700's. Callentine actively seeks to engage the Highland Republic as an equal in the international arena of trade and diplomacy, but the Highland Republic refuses to recognize Callentine's sovereignty, despite most of the Endeavor Sea region supporting Callentine legitimacy.
