"There were many who had raised their sails as privateers in the last war, fighting under whatever flag would accept them, but the uneasy peace that predominated after its end left many experienced and able sailors without work. With extensive combat experience and many maintaining the formidable vessels they had sailed or commandeered during the war. All too many would later turn to piracy after the end of the war. And thus it was that the maritime pirates entered a new and dangerous era: no longer privateers fighting against rival empires, instead, these corsairs fought for their own gain and assembled formidable fleets, sometimes rivaling imperial navies and trading company fleets in the level of fear that they inspired."
-Pirates of the New Age: Histories and Chronicles
The pirates stood assembled as they opened the chest and revealed the lavish riches of the New World. Gold from the Viceroyalties of Brazil, New Spain, and Peru, riches beyond imagining. And this was merely the first chest, there were many others, containing spices from the East Indies, a shipment of black powder originally intended for the Viceroyalty of Peru.
The traditional code of conduct had strict stipulations on the sharing and division of all seized goods. All present had at least some mistrust of the others' intentions, but for now, they could revel in their newfound wealth, enough to be rich to the end of their days.
