With a bit of thought, the werewolf considered his options. Above all else, getting upset with the old woman would not be to his benefit. She seemed to know the cure to the potion anyway. Not to mention she wanted him to try it out. However, he still had no idea what he needed to do. Maybe a bit of preparation and a few questions could help him out!
“You say you needed help with herb gathering, correct?”
The old woman’s eyes lit up, as she seemed to become excited at his re-asking of the question. “Yes! Oh, it would be wonderful if you could help me find these herbs! There are so many potions I wish to make but can’t because I’m on short supply of so many!”
Knight Wolf gave a nod as he scratched the back of his head. “I see….” He put a hand to his mouth and felt the tusk growing larger. “And if I get these herbs for you, you will make a potion that will turn me back from… whatever I am turning into?”
The lady gave a nod. “I’ll make sure to circle the required herbs in the field guide. It’s helped me thus far, and I just recently transcribed a new one!”
The werewolf gave a nod, but then thought. “Mam, the potion I drank is supposed to give me the attributes of something that accomplishes my given task, correct?”
She gave a nod, then tilted her head as she looked at the knight. “If one is currently not doing anything, then the potion will base itself off of the lifestyle of the user.” She scratched the side of her head, seeming a bit confused. “I suppose this would make sense because you are….”
“Huh? What? What is it, Missus?” The werewolf’s ears drooped more, though this was due to the potion and not his mood.
“You are looking more like a… pig.” Her eyes saddened. “I am deeply sorry. I did not think it would be turning you into a pig. It must be due to your appetite. Do you eat a lot?”
The werewolf frowned, gently knocking against his chestplate. He sighed, folding his arms in annoyance. “Not enough, I’d say. I’m feeling rather famished.”
The old woman put her hands to her mouth. “Oh goodness! You travelled such a long way and just got into town. How could I have not asked? I will go prepare you a meal and a few rashions for your journey, along with the journal and list of herbs I need!”
Knight Wolf folded his arms, realizing that the woman must have been feeling upset at what she was turning the werewolf into. “I do not wish to be a bother, but I suppose a hearty meal before heading out would work well.” His eyes saddened as he looked at the frail body of the old woman before him. “Yet… why don’t I help you? You are already being too kind, and it seems you have a lot that you need to prepare.”
She smiled, lifting a hand up to Knight Wolf’s chest and gently poking the golden emblem he had embellished onto the armor there. “You are so sweet, adventurer. I can already tell you have a heart that is more gold than that emblem on your chest.” She wrapped her arms around the Knight Wolf, giving him a light hug. “It is alright. I will prepare everything for you. I will even make a ‘ration potion’ for you, so you need not worry about hunger.”
“Ration potion?” Knight Wolf asked, following the woman to the small doorway to her living space.
“One portion will keep your energy up and make you feel decently full for an entire week.” She thought as she walked through the doorway to the dining room table. “It keeps you hydrated and fed, too.”
“Must be a calorie potion.” Knight Wolf said, deep in thought as he imagined the potion.
“What is a calorie?” The woman turned around, looking confused.
Knight Wolf shook his head, “I…. I have no idea. Why did I even say that? I don’t even know what a ‘calorie’ is.”
Knight Wolf did what he could to help the old woman in preparing him for his quest. She was grateful for his assistance and even taught him how to make a ration potion so he could make one for himself later.
To the werewolf’s astonishment, the old lady created quite a large feast for him. It was much more food than he could eat, but he ate until he felt his belly pushing against his armor, making him have to loosen it to accommodate for his current girth.
After the meal, she packed the list of herbs, the field guide, a few (actual) food rations, the rations potion, and a pack to carry his herbs and items in to make carrying the load easier.
She gave a final hug to the werewolf. “Thank you, Knight Wolf. I look forward to your return.”
Knight Wolf smiled, returning her hug. “I will bring you the herbs you need. Rest assured, I will return back within the week.”
At those words, Knight Wolf departed, leaving the village in the direction of the Mythical Forest where these herbs could be located. After hours of trekking, The werewolf began to feel his stomach growl again. Frowning he put a hand to his chestplate. “Oh come on. I just ate foo-“ His eyes widened when he stared at his hand. For some reason, the glove he was wearing was slipping off his fingers. Not to mention… his fingers seemed a bit stubbier than before. “What in the?”
He pulled off his glove as he continued walking. With a bit of shock, he found that his fingers were fusing together and turning a black color. “This… this is the potion. Are my hands turning into hooves?”
Panicked, the werewolf pulled off his other glove and noted the same thing. “Hooves! What? How can I even grab things if I have hooves!”
He looked behind him, unable to see the village that he left behind. Looking forward, he could see a line of trees up ahead. Giving a sigh, he continued walking, realizing that he would need to make camp soon, as the sun was setting…. Not to mention, he was hungry.
With another growl of his stomach, Knight Wolf remembered the potion the lady had given him and the potion he made under her instruction. Pulling them out of the sack, he stared at the green liquid inside the two bottles. One was labelled “K.W.” for “Knight Wolf”. This was the one he had made. While he trusted the lady’s potion more, he wanted to save it for another time. It was better that he took this potion now.
His stomach growled again, making his mind immediately desire for food. With gritted teeth, he mumbled. “Bottoms up.” Pulling the cork off the bottle to his potion, he quickly drank the contents of the bottle until it was empty. He heaved a bit, not expecting the terribly bitter taste. “Ugh! That tastes awful!”
He groaned after wiping the liquid from his mouth, placing the bottle back in his pack. Looking down at his chestplate, he no longer heard his stomach growling, but something seemed off. “Wait… didn’t she say there was a dosage?” He thought for a moment. “I’m sure I’ll be fine. I will not be gone longer than a week. That’s all it will take to get these herbs.”
The werewolf trekked on a bit longer before deciding that it was dark enough to make camp. Thank heavens, too. His armor was feeling heavy, and a bit tight. Must’ve tightened itself from all his walking. Taking off his armor, he felt immediate relief as his belly bulged out, being unhindered by a heavy chestplate. Though, to his confusion, the mail tunic seemed to be revealing more of his belly than he remembered it doing.
“Can’t worry about that now…. I need firewood!” The werewolf put the problem to the back of his mind as he obtained the wood he needed for the night. He set up the fire and lit it, finding the mail tunic was becoming a bit uncomfortable, as it was slowly riding up his belly the longer he made the fire.
With the fire lit, the werewolf leaned back against a tree, finding the position to be a lot more comfortable, what with the tight chainmail he was wearing. “Goodness. I should take off my armor more. I did not realize that the chain mail was actually this small… or shiny?” He looked down at his chest, seeing the mail was glowing a bit. Another odd thing, but nothing to fuss about. This was probably just the effects of the Life Wish potion, anyway.
Still finding he was not tired, the werewolf opened up the field guide he was given and started reading it, finding the part about the fairies to be fascinating. They seemed to be inhabitants of these woods, so it was possible that they may know where to find these herbs he needed. Best be careful to stay on their good side, though. They seemed a bit mischievous.
The question still remained. What was Knight Wolf going to do once he woke up tomorrow?
