Returning back to GIF madness, heh. It's too fun to throw it out from my list of things.
This little thing.... i just was browsing for some rare footage of russian MTV from 2000-2004,
and accidentally found 2 logos of old MTV. And after some time... well, i complied it all into this fun little thing.
If only i didn't trashed up my old collecton of VHS recordings back in the day... there were some tapes with MTV recordings... Oh well.

Our 00's were like EU in the late 90s?, tbh.
Same as for MTV. It was "just a flicking lot of music & some shows",
Later, circa 2006-2008? we had the same shit with that load of crappy shows.
If you hating it for that.
It was pretty much dead here in 2009-2010 - cool tracks were mostly at night.
and yet i still remember how i often recorded tracks from the tv on my cassette deck,
I had dial-up, and the quality of linkup was awful, so it was better to record tracks from
TV than searching for them in the *net's... Heh.

Here in the U.S., (In my opinion) from the beginning, I did like a small amount of the content, and the most interesting (More obscure and underground) stuff was mostly on late at night, but I think that it had a very destructive effect on pop music.
At that point, it was still mostly very expensive to produce videos, and the pop music industry felt it had to promote it's product with them. This shut out a lot of things that didn't have the financial backing to produce videos, making pop music even more of a corporate ghetto. This was also the time where many bands which previously had an "Edge" to them started selling out, getting overproduced, and becoming tediously wanky. Bands were feeling obligated to spend more and more on their projects.
However, I was always more interested in weirder, edgier stuff for the most part, and these circumstances helped produce a backlash, which resulted in the explosion of punk/ garage/ new wave/ D.I.Y./ experimental stuff. Ironically, many aspects of these things were then, of course, co-opted by the industry as well.
Luckily, technology, starting with things like cassette tape, cheap synths and other gear, and later the home computer revolution have helped even out the playing field...
I always thought cassettes were a particularly interesting case. They were the first shot across the bow of the industry, and they were (Justifiably, in retrospect) terrified. I remember some records having a tag line on them that said "Home recording is killing music". -Our take on that was "Home recording is killing the music industry, and it's about time!" They fostered a whole cassette, mail-art, D.I.Y. underground, and were the beginning of regular people being able to produce and distribute their own music and allowed people to realize that they COULD actually do it themselves, fostering a real explosion of creativity.
Did Russian MTV broadcast only western content, or was there Russian material as well?

50/50. Some shows were translated (often badly, i suppose for shits & giggles), some were original.
+ 50/50 on tracks - 'cause there were a lot of good bands and tracks.
Mostly hip-hop, tbh, buuuut whatever. Maybe i'm just too picky, but i don't like russian hip-hop scene.
There were and still is some good bands and guys actually, but i don't like all of it, if you catching the vibe.
In 1998-2002 they were heavily on western stuff with little to nothing of original content, and since 2002
they started making more and more "original" stuff. In 201X it eneded with MTV turning into FRIDAY channel with
all that "original" nonsense that turned out shittier than ever (literally, there's nothing to watch on FRIDAY rn),
and original MTV gone cable, still being a bit crappy like in 2010-2011 - badly translated shows, some lame "originals", and rare portions of music. Both channels in the end just ain't so good to watch,
and tbh, they're more like "godawful" to me. Maybe i'm just too old for stuff that's airing on them. *shrug*

Although the music stuff was so ubiquitous that it would have been next to impossible to avoid it, I didn't watch it a lot. I've really paid no attention to their non-music programming myself, there was never anything that interested me...
As an American, it would no doubt be a real kick to see the Russian version of what they did. Too bad you don't still have those old VHS tapes...

Heh. I suppose eventually there will be someone with records from that time.
I've seen some videos at VK, and some same-themed forum threads with stuff (TV history and such).
Maybe there's even something on YT, who knows.
