Would probably be the second night she stayed there, Kris isn't yet used to Iolite being there and Iolite's not yet used to existing.
Her creators gave them cat-like eyes that reflect light that wasn't absorbed back into the eye, so it has another chance of being absorbed and lets them see in darker areas, and means some light reflects back out if it wasn't absorbed at all, making their eyes glow when it hits 'em just right.
