That is one of the things I like in the reboot; they made the side characters more animal like. I think the original reason why the side characters look like humans with animal masks, is because they wanted characters that don't look too strange next to the ducks and mice.
Another thing I never liked is when they give them(especially the Beagle Boys)human ears, instead of the floppy ones. It just looks so off! Wish at least they would settle on one of the designs(hopefully for the floppy ears), because it can get confusing. That's why I think that the reboot goes in the right direction in that case.
