Saguaro U character sheet 1
A sheet of character models from a project I was never quite able to get off the ground...
Vaguely inspired by Joe Rosales' wildlifers, Saguaro U was a college age strip idea that just never quite worked the way I wanted it to, and was ultimately dropped as a result.
I have a huge pile of character sketches, a fair amount of background detail, and a few roughed out comics stories and scripts.

He was one of the better character designs, but was more or less intended as a joke in himself- (a seal? In the desert?)
I guess the mian reason I gave up was the complete lack of interest anyone showed in the material when I was showing it around.
This was also when I was living in Arizona, before my art actually took off, and I was very obscure and unknown.
However, I never went to college myself, so it always felt a little like I had no real life experiences to draw upon for the comic.
I still have scripts for maybe 4 stories, but no continuity to string them together. (No idea where they are though- I found a couple pages for one a week ago, which was why I remembered these and posted two of the sheets of characters.)
The stories were intended from the beginning to have a stronger adult slant than Joe's stories were, as his were high school aged teens, and these were all in their early 20s.
In the end, only one story was ever finished, and was inked by Steve Addlesee and printed by Shanda Fantasy Arts as a backup in (I think) Frenchy Doudou..
And that story had Charlie in it- my rather thinly veiled tribute character to my late friend Deal Whitley.
All the other model sheets are in one binder though, so I could find that and scan the individual pics to post here if anyone is interested.

High school was absolute and indescribable hell for me.
I couldn't wait to be out of it, and I had nightmares over it for years after I finally got my diploma and could escape.
I never went to college, so in the end the project was probably doomed.
Just not enough personal experiences to ever really write enough material.
I might revisit the characters, or some of them, for some other kind of a project at some point.
But nothing is certain, and its been so long since I drew these that I am not sure how well I would do with them if I tried to go back to my notes and start over.
