Being around donkeys is far better than horses because the donkeys have stronger personalities than horses do.

It depends on "IF" you want the animal to have a personality.

If what you are looking for is just a machine that will carry you around you don't want the animal to have a personality that is apparent because you might just realize that that machine that you are forcing to do what you want may actually be a living felling creature that does not actually like what you are making it do.

Now if what you are looking for is a friend that you want to interact with it in an emotional way then you would like the animal to have a personality.

Horses are far more submissive than donkeys are and its a lot easier to ignore that they are living felling creatures. Where donkeys are quite more assertive of their wants and desires. You can force a horse to do what you want it to do where you have to try to convince a donkey that what you want it to do is something that it actually wants to do.

Always pay attention to what the animal is trying to tell you.

Another thing is not to anthropomorphizes them, they are not human, you need to understand them on their terms and in their understanding of the world and not how you see and understand the world.
