Concept: The Midwife and her Apprentice
(super abbreviated personal reference sheet for some more characters coming up in chapter 1)
"Eggy" and her mentor, Madame Greta Josy!
Eggy--or Eglantine, as is her proper name--is a sweet little thing, but very very naive. She used to simply walk the streets of Illumis, on the lookout for the poor and destitute mothers--usually prostitutes--trying to give birth on the street. She'd shepherd them to the midwives of the city for help, though soon there was only one who would allow her to bring these sorts of ladies of ill repute into their establishments... Madame Josy being that particularly patient woman. From supervising and assisting with all of these births, soon Eggy was taken on as an apprentice, though even a patient woman has her limits... Eggy loves helping people and does so in earnest, and she also loves lil tiny babies and is quite good at calming them. What she is not so good at is dealing with the high mortality rate and gross realities of the trade, or thinking ahead... But, these things come with experience, and in time she'll likely be much better at it! ... Probably!
Now, Madame Josy is a seasoned midwife, and an expert with herbs as well. Her reputation took a big dip after it became known she would serve the lowly streetwalkers of the city, but it soon rose again when people learned just how many survived in her care. (She later was made a saint for her work, but that's much later) She's been assisting with births since the tender age of 9, and comes from a long line of proud midwives... But has never had any children of her own. She hasn't been in Illumis long--or even the country of Hexaton, for that matter--but hails from Hearthome city in Anglos. She speaks both Anglic and the Hexatonian language quite well though, (unlike Eggy...) and has adapted very well to her new environment. She's a bit snarky and definitely a hard-hearted realist at times, but she is good at her work and always shows her clients respect, no matter their circumstance. ... Though she would like it very much if Eggy would stop bringing them to her house at all hours of the night.
