In other words, depends on a key factor: Plot.
I have had to consider the limits of my own characters to. Especially Belle. I've had to establish a max for her so I can write her better.

The all-powerful pressure gauge of Plot.
And yeah, sometimes size limits work for certain characters. I have a few characters I could probably consider stuff like that for. In Ziggys case, I figure he runs too much on Rule of Funny for it not to hold him back.
