I was inspired to try animation, which I've been interested in attempting for a while, so I decided to buckle down and do a little something. It's pretty solid at the beginning, but the ending is definitely rough... but I rushed the end so, it's to be expected.
I've been fascinated by animation for a long time, and I've watched numerous talks and panels discussing animation techniques, so I have a general idea of how to make an animation look decent, but this is the first time putting it into practice, and I'm sure there are things I can do better.
Also, why doesn't Furaffinity have an animation category.
Speaking of Furaffinity being inadequate for this kind of thing; it seems that I can't assign a thumbnail for an animated gif? So, it appears as a while square, which NO ONE is going to click unless they're just morbidly curious of perhaps watch me already. That's really annoying.

I understand the fascination with animation. It's something I'd love to do myself. Also, I understand what you mean about the lack of a decent thumbnail option. You're right in saying that people aren't going to click on it unless they are curious, though I'm always curious about animations, and I like your work.
This is really cool. It's nice and smooth and I love the little jump the foot makes as it bursts out of the shoe. I'd love to see more of your animation in future. : )

The 'jump' is an application of an animation technique that I really wanted to apply to a transformation scenario. The same principle is applied to other places to a lesser (and poorly planned) extent; like when the nails become even thicker and when the foot begins to expand unevenly.
It's something used in fighting game sprites, where the attack is just 2 frames, maybe a frame or 2 of anticipation.
So, it's a slow build up to the frame where the shoe is just about to burst, then from that frame it jumps straight to the foot being completely free of the shoe... some frame smearing on the toes helps sell the movement.
Another little detail that helps sell that motion is that while the foot goes down, the scraps of the shoe continue moving up as if moved by the momentum. Instead of continuing to animate the shoe scraps, I just make them poof, and it gives it a pretty neat visual effect.

I was going to do a weight gain thing instead of this foot TF, but doing a full body is a hell of a lot more work... a foot is still complex, but there's fewer moving parts and it was easier to throw together in a night.
This was a special thing, I probably won't do another for a while... at least not while I still have so much comm work on my plate.

I'm not sure I'm comfortable enough with this to do it for money, and I'm not entirely sure how long it would take me to do commissions of this nature. So, I have no idea how I would price something like this at the moment. I might have to charge animation by the hour rather than a base price. We'll see.
Thanks! Yeah, I did enjoy it, actually. Animation isn't as painful as people make it out to be, at least it seemed pretty painless to me. Animation like this is pretty rare on FA, so I'd like to do more. Despite not having a thumbnail, animation seems to stand out quite a bit.
And yes, it's very flattering to have your first anything praised, I'll try to keep it from going to my head, lol.

That actually looks pretty awesome Mikal. As for the thumbnail, I believe for my runa and kera stomp animations I took a clip of a completely different image x.x So until something better comes down the pipe you will have to be creative with the thumbnail bit for animations. Still though looks great =]
Hmm, I'd recommend maybe lingering on the shoe deforming a bit more first to really sell the pressure, it'd help the burst look less abrupt. Right now it looks like the shoe is exploding on it's own rather than bursting.
Also maybe leave some of the shoe on, makes the foot more visually interesting, makes it look less like the shoe is evaporating. Plus it's the little details that really make an animation feel compelling and real.
Other than that, pretty good.

That's a good point, I may had done that naturally if I was working with a tool that allowed to to stretch frames out longer. This was done in a process of drawing each frame by hand and tossing them together in a program that just runs them at a set frame rate one after another; pretty primitive. I don't think you can go very wrong accentuating the anticipation more. I'll keep this in mind.
I purposefully made the shoe evaporate to save on time, since this was a spur of the moment thing, I didn't want to spend an excessive amount of time on it. You'll notice that I had an anklet on the character at the start, but I quickly realized that drawing it every frame would quickly add up into additional hours drawing it, so I made it explode and go away instead of removing it from the frames I already had done.
Thanks for the critique, I don't get enough of that.
