More from Wotan
This piece mostly comes from an old memory from the family cottage. The thing that sparked this particular memory was a recent morning, when I saw several birds scolding at one another over the juniper berries in the bushes out front of the house.
Seeing the species of the birds involved, I chuckled to myself, saying: “Looks like we’ve got the lineup for our afternoon ball game, here in the Juniper League, with the Cardinals squaring off against the Blue Jays…”
It immediately made me remember the last time I saw such an impromptu avian ‘ball game’, this time over cedar cones. It took me back to a mid October some time in the mid to late Eighties, back up at the aforementioned family cottage. For the short and dirty: Unlike in the US, Thanksgiving is celebrated in October in Canada, which meant that some years, it was still warm enough that we could celebrate it at the family cottage, and even better, eat our meal outside at the picnic table, valiantly pretending that it was still summer…
One particular year, I was treated to the spectacle of my maternal grandfather laughing fit to split, when the mashed potatoes suddenly turned red...
Another, smaller inspiration comes from a series of delightfully infamous billboards for Saskatoon Restaurant in Greenville, South Carolina, which all spout the slogan: “There’s plenty of room for all God’s creatures. Right next to the mashed potatoes.” Repulsive ‘carnist’ that I am, I just can’t resist!
