Marcus Gurney, former lead investigative agent and eventually promoted to Senior Captain of the DEP; formerly Rick Bedlam's partner and a noted specialist in the field of supernatural weaponry. Upstanding and by-the-book, Gurney spends much of his time invested in work and serving as a liaison between investigative and administrative duties, often with positive results.

Though he claims to be happily married, Gurney often finds himself at moral impasses regarding both social and sexual situations and tends to give in to temptation at the cost of frequent guilt. Moreover, no one in the department has ever seen nor heard of his wife as a real living person, leading some of the younger agents to question his good nature and his symbol as an ideal enforcer of the law, supernatural or otherwise.
