To
hali for being a continuous source of inspiration and awesomeness. This took a few ages longer than planned, and about half of the time was spent desperately trying to figure out how to draw those feathers, and how to make wings that are also arms, and have hands at the end. The other half was actually drawing all those feathers... I ended up cheating and giving him the swanky GPE t-shirt (available at his site!) to avoid having to figure out how to make the wingfeathers connect to the shoulderblades. I could've picked an easier angle considering I've never drawn a bird before, but oh well, it worked out.
I started working on this roughly at the same time as
stampy started on his tribute picture, his picture showing the birdy we wish we had, and mine being the bird as most of us know him. Sort of floating alone in what would've been a plywood box if I'd decided to draw a background...
Well, alone aside from the robots.
And us, the Internet crowd, always just a few clicks away.
Thanks for being who you are and doing what you do, Matthew. You don't know it, but you've taught me some things I didn't know I wanted to be taught. That, and you just plain rock.

When the creature can't fly anyhow, I've noticed most artist will either move all the feathers to the arms so that it connects as a regular shoulder, allowing a full hand as well, the way you've done. Or they tend to make an actual wing, simply giving the last few feathers the dexterous ability of fingers and the overall tip the movement of a wrist.
It's a good angle, though he could stand to tilt more so the keyboard doesn't look like it's about to topple. ;p

I prefer the look of the dexterous feathers thing, but it's too stylized to work on a realistic-looking instrument. The problem I had was actually drawing the individual feathers. How would they connect to the back? Would they just end suddenly below the shoulder? Would they be folded down or sticking out backwards? I couldn't make it look right, so I cheated.
What do you mean about the tilting? I actually drew this over a simplified 3D scene, to make the perspective easier for myself. I can assure you it's all quite physically possible, and comfortable!

Alone, physically he looks like he's standing straight up and down. The keyboard is positioned cattywompus to him as it moves into the background and from an overhead position, the view point being at the edge of the keys. His view point doesn't match, so the left forward edge of the keyboard looks like it's slipping forward and left, about to overbalance.
Any chance you have a link to the scene? Maybe it's just the slight mismatch of medium that's throwing my eyes off.

Practice makes everything better. It's not incredibly noticeable, but I'm taking drawing classes, I can't draw worth anything but I seem to notice more than before. XD You're quite good as it is, foreshortening sucks. We should have a two dimensional world, it's make lots of things easier.
