Driving to Muir Woods, near San Francisco, one of us (can't remember who) spotted this handsome hawk and we stopped the car, stepped out and walked over. All the while, this fellow was giving us the eye, and decinding that he would be a patient bird and hang around long enough for me to get a good piccy of him. Actually, I have no idea what this fellow's gender is, and we haven't found out if s/he's a Cooper's Hawk or a red-shouldered, either- they look very similar to me, so it's hard for this very amateur critter-spotter to tell. :)
I gave the hawk a bow of thanks and we went on our way.
EDIT: well, did some digging and this may be a juvenile of the Red-tailed species. I based my supposition on this bit of info: http://fireflyforest.net/firefly/20.....hawk-immature/ and here: http://www.blm.gov/id/st/en/fo/four.....rds/links.html

Yeah, I KNOW, too fuggin' cool! *giggles* We were driving along, when one of us spotted this fellow on his/her pole, and we actually TURNED AROUND just so we could get out of the car to take her picture. Very patient hawk, hung around for a good few minutes watching us mill around under her pole, then flew off when she was either bored, or feeling threatened, and I was lucky to catch her in flight from the beginning raise of the wings to seeing her wheeling off out of sight...
Bit of a bummer that no one seems to have noticed this one- glad you commented on her. She needed some lovin's.

It was perching on a telephone pole near a farmer's field, apparently a favourite place for these guys to watch for rodents and small rabbits. Normally, the'd be sitting in a tree doingthe same thing, but since there's few trees of any size in some areas, telephone poles will do in a pinch. Just you wait until I find my pix of a Bald Eagle KaniS and I saw on our way to LA from Winnipeg...
Oh that would be nice to see.
I'm headed out of town at the end of the week for a week with a friend to hang out at his farm and take in some much needed R&R. We're going to star gaze, work on some interesting projects, talk like a couple of scientific uber-nerds over a drink and a toke. I might have a chance to chat with his uncle about doing a little riding and maybe just a day to do nothing at all but write. It's something I'm really looking forward to. No distractions, no answering to anyone but me for a little while.

S/he could very well be a young red-tailed hawk- read the rest of the description, I left an edit almost a year ago saying just that. Such a pretty bird, this. We saw some lovely wildlife on these trips: everything from pronghorn to deer to Bald Eagles. Just awesome. Not so awesome re my photos- this one was a nice exception.
