Moonlit Showdown [Commission by Ariveil]
As he took another step through the deserted streets, the dragon's boot sloshed in a lone puddle of what he assumed to be runoff from the dumpster to his right, echoing through the alley he had emerged from moments earlier. The hues of the city were eerily illuminated by the full moon, which had appeared to move closer in the sky above. His hand remained on his hip, brushing up against the sheathed weapon he had with him. Although distorted areas were nothing new to Zhang, this one seemed incredibly off-putting. Despite the glow of lights being easily visible from within the slanted, oddly-spaced skyscrapers around him, there was no other sign that anyone else might be present in the massive metropolis; No cars were driving down the road, no people out for nighttime strolls, not even a piece of gum or garbage stuck to the sidewalk. It was as if he had been dropped into a half-assed model of a city plan, and the dragon definitely did not want to be here any longer than he had to.
Zhang slowly made his way up to a nearby door, his hand never moving from his concealed weapon as he did so. He gave the knob a firm rattle, confirming that it was locked tight. The dragon huffed, pulled his blade from his side, and pressed its tip against the door, ready to create a landmark for himself in an attempt to gain a sense of direction in this bizarre world he had found himself in. His eyes followed the blade as he ran it downwards, watching it leave a distinct slash in the wood before pulling it out and sheathing it once again. As he turned to leave and repeat the process however, the sound of settling wood caused the dragon to turn back around with urgency. He watched as his gash began to close at the bottom, moving all the way back up to the top and mending. It was like watching a time lapsed version of a wound healing until the damage had been undone entirely, like he had never slashed it in the first place. Zhang could feel the sweat forming on his brow.
"Just what kind of world have I ended up in…?"
These were the first words he had mumbled to himself since arriving in the surreal landscape he now found himself in, and though he couldn't decide whether it was a pro or a con, he had no one to answer his question. The dragon found himself crossing his arms and rubbing the bridge of his snout, guiding his fingers down his whiskers in thought before sighing and turning back around and preparing to continue onward.
He made it about two more blocks before a sound behind him made him stop dead in his tracks. Zhang drew his weapon and turned around, jumping back and preparing for whatever had just made the noise in the otherwise dead quiet space. There, up on a lamp post that he had passed moments earlier, stood a red, reptilian creature peering down at him with a massive grin on his face. He was crouched and hunched over, his green eyes piercing Zhang with a gaze that he could only describe as predatory. His grip on his dagger grew tighter. After what seemed like an eternity, the silent stare down ended when the creature spoke.
"Didn’t expect any visitors t'nite. How the fuck didja get here?" Despite his upbeat tone, Zhang shuddered. The lizard's aura wreaked of chaotic intentions, though perhaps that was fitting for a place such as this.
"…I was just going." The dragon tersely stated to the figure before him, beginning to back away. With so little information to go on regarding what he was capable of, it would be foolish to attempt to stand his ground and fight. However, the stranger didn't seem intent on letting him leave that easily. His grin only seemed to widen at the dragon's dismissive response.
"Aww, don’t be like that. Do ya have any idea how freakin' lonely it gets around here when there's no one around t'bother?" the lizard wiped away a nonexistent tear from his eye, a gesture so fake that Zhang involuntarily scoffed at the sight. He found his brow twitching in frustration at the way that the creature talked down to him.
"I don't have time for games," The dragon stated as firmly as he could. "Now if you'll excuse me, I'm leaving." He cautiously continued to back away, his amber eyes tracking every slight change in the lizard's demeanor.
It was then that the stranger's face contorted from his unnerving grin to a more sinister scowl. "Well what if I don't wanna excuse ya?" he stated. "I didn't say y'could leave, ya fuckin' furred bastard." Blackness enveloped his left eye, bleeding over the whites and glowing green as ink bleeds into paper. A single red pupil emerged from the sea of black, piercing right through Zhang.
Though not one to usually fall for taunts, Zhang felt a surprising amount of hostility towards the lizard's words. His face scrunched up into a snarl and he took up a more aggressive stance. "I'll make you eat your words, monster!" the dragon growled through clenched teeth. "Allow me to offer you a small courtesy and warn you that I'm not one to be taken lightly!"
The lizard's grin instantly returned as he watched the dragon fall so easily for his taunt, though it definitely helped that he had a special knack for manipulating people. "Monster? Yer the one makin' threats outta nowhere! I'm only spittin' insults in good fun!" he chuckled, "I have a name too y'know…It's Nomudo. Nomudo Malson," he narrowed his eyes condescendingly, only fueling Zhang's rage, "not that it'll matter soon for ya."
With his temper flaring again, Zhang had a moment of lucidity before he could lose his composure all together. It was definitely unlike him to be this short-tempered, not to mention that this level of anger over words felt entirely unwarranted, especially compared to verbal abuse he had been dealt in the past. He took a deep breath in, centering himself on his exhale and meeting Nomudo's glare with his own.
"It was a good attempt you…creature," He cracked his neck, glaring at Nomudo. "but I'm not taken in by words so easily. I'm onto your mind games. Just know you aren't the first one to try to get in my head, and wont be the last one to fail."
Nomudo scoffed at Zhang and glanced down at the dragon, frowning in disapproval. "Ah well, it was worth a shot." His smile soon returned, and the lizard motioned for the dragon to come, "Guess we gotta do this the old fashioned way, eh? Cuz one way or another yer not leavin' here alive."
An involuntary smirk etched its way onto Zhang's face. "Ah, how many times have I heard that as well." His hand waved dismissively at Nomudo as he readied himself. "Come then. Prove to me that your words are more than just talk, monster."
